I started woodworking in my late teens when I got a job as a laborer at a local cabinet shop. I ended up leaving the shop to work for an amazingly talented cabinet maker/carver who greatly influenced my appreciation of the medium but as I grew older I moved out of the profession to pursue a different career. For many years I longed to return to a hobby of woodworking but always resisted due to living in an apartment and not having the dedicated space. Several years ago after moving into our first house my wife surprised me with a table saw for Christmas. I soon realized that despite my appreciation for woodworking I had much to learn. I started making some small projects for my daughter and from there I built a workbench and cabinets for my small shop. Since then I have been working to develop my skills with both traditional hand tools and power tools. In the last couple years I have focused mostly on making custom walking sticks and canes (again something that started with a project for my daughter). This has allowed me to explore my interests in carving and most recently try my hand at turning. I have found woodworking to be a rewarding way to express my creativity and feel that I am finally at the age that I can learn from my mistakes as opposed to getting frustrated and giving up.
