I have always liked CAD programs but have used them very little. I was an engineering major for a short time in college and took a few technical drawing classes, which I loved. I always thought it would be neat to own some sort of CAD program but never bought one. I think it is great that Google now offers one for free! I had never heard of Sketchup before I found LumberJocks.
Anyway, I am building a new router table for my Incra fence+positioner, so I thought I would give it a go. The pro...

Awhile back Wood Magazine had an article on building a mobile outfeed table that would fit over your table saw. Since I need all the space in my garage I can get, I went ahead and built one that would fit over my table saw to give me some much needed work space and a handy outfeed table.
I thought this was pretty spiffy and a great use of space. As I always do I look at the latest project posts on Lumberjocks looking for inspiration for my next project. Whilst browsing I came ac...

Hello fellow woodworkers,In the spirit of sharing woodworking knowledge I am writing this tutorial for anyone interested in constructing these beautiful end grain cutting boards. Take a look at the photos of the four styles I have made, or create your own pattern’s and follow the steps I have outlined in this tutorial. Questions and comments are welcome, enjoy.

After much knashing of teeth and pulling of hair, I decided on a compromise.
1) I am going to use 3/4” plywood, which I have and can obtain that is flat, i.e. not warped. The weight is not significantly different than the 1/2” MDF. The loss in blade height of 1/4” is inconsequential, because very thick pieces would undoubtedly be narrower, and I would cut them with the RAS. 2) I am going back to the original back design of Scott and Nixon, i.e. 11.5”. I don’t ...

I was absolutely overwhelmed by the positive response to my Zig Zag How To blog post yesterday, that I decided to brainstorm some possible combinations (on my lunch break) using the basic steps I outlined yesterday. All of the same techniques and steps apply, and really the only difference is the woods and measurements that make up the original “sticks.” Same rules apply to width = height. Length is up to you.
Please experiment with whatever measurements and combinations strike...

For those of you who asked me for a tutorial on how to make the zig zag legless vegetable death table (cutting board), here is my best shot. I am far too impatient to take photos when I work, so I decided to illustrate the process using some good old Adobe PhotoShop. I hope you find this useful and informative.
I will outline the process in 10 steps below. I have assumed that when viewing these steps that basic woodworking skills are familiar to you. If you have questions, or run into snag...

From blotch controlIt seems one of the most difficult tasks for woodworkers is finding a stain and finish system that’s capable of giving consistent and durable results. For many years I had used nitrocellulose lacquer for my projects with appropriate oil and or water-based stains. One of the problems with lacquer isit is extremely volatile and subject to vaporize organic compounds that could be dangerous from a health perspective.
With this in mind, I set out to try and adapt my syste...

How to use a KerfmakerOk, many asked me this question, and I have seen it again and again on LJ.
If you need to find out how to make one, you can see my Kerfmaker 'Brass'n wood'.
I’ll try to explain, as well as I can, feel free to ask questions if I do not make myself clear (I’m only human):
Collect what is needed, in this case a base stock and two thinner side stocks, and of course a Kerfmaker.(The pipe and matches are optional, and I must warn against smoking…).

I have develped a technique that has worked on several pieces now with outstanding results. I first sand to 150 (more or less depending on wood and how dark I want the stain) then apply a wood conditioner. I have found that the conditioner is critical regardless of the wood. Then I apply the stain. After drying I apply a first coat of poly, I like Minwax Semi-gloss, then sand with 320. After drying I apply a second coat then sand with 400 grit wet dry automotive paper. At this point I use...
