Hi Folks..

I just wanted to share something that happened to me the other day..

I was at the shop working on a sideboard that I wanted to have fluted legs.. well.. not ever having made fluted legs..I kinda had an idea how it was done and ordered a fluting bit.. turned 6 legs on my lathe.. made a sophisticated top mounted jig to hold my router and bit.. checked my indexing head to see how many notches I needed to turn.. and went at it.. sound ok right?? WRONG!.. I totally messed up one of the walnut legs.. the bit was too big, went in too deep..made pointed flutes instead of rounded ones..was not accurate at all and I was left with shavings..a mess.. a ruined leg and the top of my forehead red, from scratching it while wondering if I knew what I was doing (I don’t think I do..)

SO.. I went onto Lumberjocks and saw that A1Jim was online.. so I shot him an e mail and asked him, and he told me about Charles Neil and and gave me his e mail address.. SO I shot Mr. Neil an e mail, thinking well..I’ll come back later tonight to see if i get a response.. well.. as I was about to logg off I got the ol’ familiar “you got mail!!” beep and lo and behold it was Charles..I kindly told him of my situation and sent him pictures of what I had, and what I did and what i wanted to do and boy..did he come back with a complete step by step procedure of how to not only route the flutes.. but what kind of jig to make, the bit to use or buy, and the diameter that my leg needed to be in conjunction with the bit I need to use.. basically he gave me everything I needed inch by inch ..AND.. was kind enough to send me some of his DVD’s that show’s him doing just what I am trying to do..

you know..kindness of the human heart sometimes never ceases to amaze me.. I was greatly appreciative and was taken back by his openess, kindness, and down-to-earth demeanor..I have met more than I can list here like that.. Lee Jesberger, A1Jim, socal, and way too many to list..

I want to thank Charles for his kindness and encourage all of you to check out his website charlesneilwoodworking.com theres something for everyone there..

And thanks again Jim.. for the recommendation..
