So I bought a three sided planer

Well a few weeks a go or longer I decided to buy a old three sided planer from a buddy of mine. My plan was to power the unit with a gas motor and use it in at the mill to to make firing strips. I get loads of waney board and heve no way to sell them.

So got the planer and cleaned it up and got it ready to run.
Now I needed a motor.

Went to NFLD in my boat and was in a workshop of a friend of mine and spied this old Briggs and Stratton motor in the corner. He said take it and if you can get it running you can have it.
Brought it home and did some work on it got it running and then set it up in the doorway of my shed and gave it a test run. Seems to work well

Going to transport both to the mill next week and start turning out firing strips. At least thats the plan

Comments

Quebecnewf
The motor is 45 years old and the planer is older than that.

The Ultimate Tool Collection

In a village near where I live resides what I believe could be considered the greatest collection of tools ever amassed by one person in a lifetime.

This tool collection consists of both old and new hand tools as well as a complete collection of all the power tools one could find in any shop.

This guy started collecting tools at the age of 13 and continued throughout his life. He made a good living as a helicopter pilot and spent all he made collecting. He died at an early age from cancer sadly the same year he was due to retire from work.

He had no living relatives and left the tool collection and everthing else he owned to a friend of his in the village.

I had a tour of his shop with him before he got sick and was blown away then. Since then I have had the pleasure of spending a few hours on two occasions looking through the shop.

I have seen a lot of nice shop pics over the years and I have no doubt some people have large tool collections but this collection just blows the mind.

I came back from my latest visit and got out the Lee Valley cat. After going from cover to cover I could not find one page with a tool that is not in the collection and on some pages he has every item on the page.

If one were a full time money making woodworker you would not use one tenth of the tools in this shop.

Words cannot do this collection justice and the sad part is that the person who owns it now ( a good friend of mine) is not a woodworker.

I would estimate the entire collection given the number of old and antique tools included in it at a street value of 150,000.00

Moving wood from storage to the yet as unfinished workshop

well today we took the boat and went in to the mill to get some of the wood that I have dried over the last couple of years in the solar kiln.
This lumber has been in sorage for around 2 years. I had it down to 8% MC but in the unheated storage shed what with snow drifting in and the high humidity in the summer here i am now getting readings of 14% (too high) I am now storing this lumber in the loft of the new workshop and will use the wood stove to dry it back down.
Sometime in the far distant future I hope to start building projects once again. This workshop project is one of the biggest projects I have done so far

A question about hinges

i am building a door for my new workshop. The door is 5’ wide by standard height. Door will be made out of wood. I know I can buy large strap hinges but in this region I will have to use brass or SS.

I was wondering if anyone out there has done a door like this and used wooden hinges. I checked around a bit on the net but so far have only found details on fairly small hinges.

I was wondering if someone in this large group could give some guidance on this search or have done this type of thing themselves

Method to shiplap siding for a new workshop??

I would like to shiplap the roof boards for my new workshop roof. This is approx 1200 sq ft of one inch softwood lumber. My reason for doing this is the fact that after I board in the roof I know there will be quite a bit of shrinkage and as the cracks open up I will be able to see up through them and the blue styrofoam insulation will be visible from the shop floor in these seams. I want to avoid this if possible and the only way I can think of is to ship lap the boards.

My question is what would be the best way to do this. I have three options with the tools I have.

Option 1: is a dado head on my table saw. I have a cheap dado set and I would not be worried about the roughness of the cut. Has anyone done this and if so waht are your thoughts?

Option 2 : Stack approx 4 skil saw blades on the table saw and use them in place of the dado head. I have not tried this out but some of these 7 1/4” cheap blades really zip through the wood. Thoughts??

Option 3: Use a hand or table mounted router. This would work but I don’t know if the router could stand all this heavy usage. Thoughts???

I am in the first stage of building my new workshop. This involves removing an old shed before I can start the new one.
I will document this project from start to finish on this blog. It may take two years. I hope to seal the new building in by the fall and then work on the inside over the winter.
Here goes

This is the west side of the building I have to remove the steel siding yet

This is the south side view. I have removed the steel siding. The posts you see sticking up through the snow are the foundation for the new shed

Getting time to haul the boat ashore for the winter . End of another season. Time to grease up the snowmobile and get in the woods to cut logs

In to the sawmill today

Went in to the sawmill today . First day for quite sometime too many other things to do. Sawed a few long logs 17’ to finish my rafters for the workshop. . These are 3×6x17’ . These logs are too long to go in through the log door so we pull them in through on end of the shed saw them and then pull them out through the other end.

We then filled the summer sleigh with slabs for fire wood and i will tow them out tomorrow .
good day

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee320/Quebecnewf/DSCF4003.jpg

Quebecnewf
