A Pleasant Surprise

A Pleasant Surprise

This review for the coarse grade of sanding sponges. They are sold in packs of ten at Harbor Freight. I was over there and needed to sand some curved pieces so I picked some up. I also got some Norton 60 grit sponges elsewhere so I was able to do a direct comparison. I’ve also used 3M’s sponges in the past. Harbor Freight doesn’t specify the grit but I’d say it’s between 60 and 80 grit. I wasn’t expecting much from these sponges. I’ve used ...

A Good Value

A Good Value

This review is for the Diablo/Freud 10 inch, 40 tooth circular saw blade. Model number D1040X I got this at Home Depot for around $30 or so. My Freud blades needed sharpening and I needed to put something on my tablesaw. I was very pleasantly surprised by this blade. It rips almost as well as my Freud 30 tooth (thin kerf) ripping blade. It leaves a smooth finish when crosscutting. The blade stayed sharp as long as my Freud blades did. Which is unsurprising, considering it is actu...

Pricey but excellent

Pricey but excellent

This review is for the SawStop contractor’s saw equipped with the 36” inch steel rails and “T-glide” fence. And eventually with the cast iron wings. As a preface let me say that I know that SawStop is controversial among woodworkers. This review is not an argument for or against the SawStop safety system. This review concentrates on its qualities as a table saw, not the safety brake. I’ve had this saw for over a year now and I’ve been extremely ple...

6 inch Digital Calipers with Fractional Inches

6 inch Digital Calipers with Fractional Inches

291 days ago by Purrmaster | 13 comments »

This review is for item number 68304. Don’t get this confused with item 47257 which looks similar. That one displays standard and metric in decimal only. It’s a pretty simple tool so there isn’t a lot to say. I’ve been using it for a while and it works. The display is easy to read. It can display millimeters and inches in both fractional and decimal formats. I’ve tested it against objects of known size and the readings always came out correctly. I got m...

Serious Imperfection

Serious Imperfection

This review is for the Harbor Freight (some call it Central Machinery) item #30289. 6” free standing jointer. I’ve had this thing for about 2 years now. It has probably been the most frustrating tool I have but it has also come in handy. This was my first serious woodworking power tool. I’ve read some reviews that said it was basic, but pretty good. I got this because I needed a jointer and it was the only one I could afford. Every other jointer that wasn’...

Freud Thin Kerf Glue Line Rip blade (10")

Freud Thin Kerf Glue Line Rip blade (10")

I’ve been using this blade since last December. Please note: It’s badly in need of sharpening now but my review will reflect the blade as it was when new, since that seems only fair). This blade does indeed perform as advertised. I put it on a 1 3/4 HP table saw. It’s worked very well. It does leave a pretty much flawless finish on the ripped wood. It’s cutting performance is excellent, but it does bog down on some harder woods like oak and hard maple. On a...

Shopsmith 40 grit sanding discs (5")

Shopsmith 40 grit sanding discs (5")

302 days ago by Purrmaster | 5 comments »

I discovered these at Lowe’s about a year ago. Often I have need to sand out a defect and the lowest grit discs gets it done the most quickly. These discs are 8 hole, hook and loop (velcro) 5 inch discs. I’ve been very pleased with these discs. They cut pretty quickly and them seem to last a long time. Not as long as Abranet, but they’re pretty durable. These discs compare favorably with Diablo, 3M, and Norton (the other brands I’ve mostly used). These thi...

Gator Grit 40 grit 5 inch sanding discs

Gator Grit 40 grit 5 inch sanding discs

302 days ago by Purrmaster | 7 comments »

Let’s get a couple of things out of the way first: Yes, I start sanding with 40 grit. Yes, this is insane. I find myself often having to sand out screwups on my projects and the rougher the sanding grit the faster I can sand it out. I got these discs at Lowe’s. I normally got the Shop Smith 40 grit discs but they were out of them this time. So I bought a 50 pack. So far I’ve gone at least dozen of them over a period of several months, on different woods. Ther...

Old Masters Gel Polyurethane Finish

Old Masters Gel Polyurethane Finish

302 days ago by Purrmaster | 3 comments »

I got this stuff last summer and have used it on several projects since. Primarily on woods that are prone to blotching. I tried it after I read about it in a Bob Flexner book. I like it very much. It goes on and comes off with great ease. All you need to do is put some on a cloth and wipe it onto your wood. Wait a few minutes and then wipe off the excess. It will dry to the touch in a few hours. It’s not particularly smelly nor messy. It’s as easy to apply as boiled li...

Lie Nielsen block plane

Lie Nielsen block plane

304 days ago by Purrmaster | 4 comments »

This review is for the Lie Nielsen small bronze block plane. I’m pretty sure I got the low angle one. This plane is great. The Stanley Sweetheart block plane I have was ok but this thing is leagues ahead of it. It’s a dinky little critter with a 1 1/4 inch blade. Mine is made of bronze, though iron ones are available. The plane is perfectly made. The sides are perfectly square to the sole and the sole is flat as a pancake. The blade is nice and thick, especially for ...
