Hand made Plane #1: Getting started

657 days ago by GaryK | 14 comments »

First of all let me say that this is the first hand plane I have ever made. I looked at some plans to get the general idea, but basically I am making it up as I go. There are things I did wrong but I will be able to fix them. I saw this type of sole on some planes in magazines and always wondered how they did it.It took me a while but I figured it out. Simple once you know how. I got ahead of myself didn’t get started taking pictures until later so I kind of went back over some th...

Shoulder Plane - Mason Dixon Style

321 days ago by Karson | 11 comments »

The Woodcraft Magazine Aug/Sept 2008 had a plan for a Shoulder Plane. Our woodworking club decided to make that item as a workshop. The workshop was held Jan 10-11, 2009. We had 12 people take the class, the cost was $13.00 for the blade purchased from Woodcraft and $10.00 if you wanted the wood supplied by the instructor. The wood that he supplied was Tiger Maple with Madagascar Ebony sole. Some Sapele was provided as glue strips for the planes. My son David and I took our own ...

Building The Holtzapffel Workbench #15: The Finished Bench!

487 days ago by Mike Lingenfelter | 25 comments »

Well it was a longtime coming but I have finished the bench. I’ve been having an issue getting the main face vise to operate smoothly. It worked just fine when I had it mocked up, but once I added the final chop it was grabbing and binding. It took some trouble shooting to find the problem, but in the end the problem was me trusting that power tools can do an accurate finish job. More on that later. First I thought the problem was that the new chop was bigger and heavier. I thought th...

WHAT'S UP? "While I'm out in my Shop". #8: Slatwall storage system, Homemade, paneled walls are done now.

204 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 29 comments »

This is a continuation of #5 in this series.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I have the slat wall paneling completed. Now, how am I going to arrange my tools? This is the last wall, I ripped my boards in half to 1 5/8”. I like it better this way. There’s more slots for arranging tools. The space between the slats is 5/16”. The furring is 1/4” x 1 1/8” ~~~~~~~~~~~~...

Greenhouse #8: Installing the roof

204 days ago by Zuki | 8 comments »

Installment #7 was actually done yesterday . . . I just blogged it tonight. This is what we did tonight. It was a little windy and drizzly tonight, however we were determined to get the roof on. I started by attaching two blocks on each side of the roof on the inside. Once the roof is up on the frame these blocks would guide the roof back along the sides. The theory is that it would prevent the roof from sliding off to either side. Theory did actually work in this case. Bolti...

Router Table Fence #1: It's not pretty but...

515 days ago by Lee A. Jesberger | 12 comments »

About twenty some years ago I bought a professional door making router bit set made by Freud. Included in the set, which I still own and use even after making hundreds of doors with it, was plans for a router fence. I bought the set for the first set of raised panel doors I made. The doors were for another contractor, and he needed them pretty quickly. After seeing the plans I realized I could make good use of a fence like that. It had the same adjustments as a shaper fence. The left an...

An ugly challenge

215 days ago by wdkits1 | 12 comments »

Here are some pics of a refinishing job that I just completed. I’m finding out that in this sour economy, many folks are opting to have their old furniture fixed and refinished instead of buying new stuff which works for me. Repairing and refinishing is not what I like to do the most but hey, it pays the bills. These tables were made sometime in the 70’s and although the woodwork was decent, the finish was sub-par to say the least. The tops are a good grade veneer which did all...

Making Inlay Banding

245 days ago by TheCaver | 8 comments »

Here’s a quick demo on how to make your own banding. Inlay, marquetry, carving, and other forms of embellishment can really elevate a piece if done tastefully. Indeed, its essential if you are replicating a period piece like I am. Moreover, adding another skill to your toolbox opens up additional forms of creativity, so what’s not to like, let’s create some banding. My federal table will need some square banding (or checkered), but I will keep it simple for this demo. Onc...

Solar kiln #1: from design to construction

397 days ago by Julian | 12 comments »

A few years ago, I had the idea of building a small solar kiln. Well, life happened, and I didn’t have the time or money to build one. Then two weeks ago, my neighbor had a red elm cut down that had been struck by lighning earlier in the spring. I figured that a beautiful elm tree would never just fall into my lap, so I had the tree removal service roll the 8’, 30”+ main trunk into my front yard. After having it milled, I realized that I couldn’t wait an entire year to...
