Part 1: First project
My first project is a baby cradle. We are expecting our first in April, so should be plenty of time. Though who knew it took so long to get those edges square! I am taking an introductory wood working class, so thankfully each time I have no idea how to proceed, the instructor is there with some tips and guidance. It started with a board… Squared (oof – who knew that would take so long!) Cut to length..Glued…Planed to proper depth. Rockers cut with bandsaw ...
Part 2: step 2 - shaping the base
I am pretty psyched how this is coming along. This week I started shaping the base. I used a band saw with 76 degree bevel and used a belt sander with table angled at the same bevel to clean the edge. Scribing the line an inch inside the oval for spindle placement, took more time expected. This week I will scoop out the center and contour the edges.
Part 3: Shaping the bottom
This next step involved shaping the bottom of the base. After scribing a line 2 1/8 inches in, I used a circular saw set to a depth of 7/8 inch. The next time I do something like this I will make the cuts closer together to make removal easier. Then with chisel (ok – for all parents and in-laws reading this, which should be 4 – a nice set of chisels for your son would be a great way to show you care about your soon to be new grandchild :) ) and mallet, I cleared the bottom. I ...
Part 4: Creating the jig for the top rail
It has been a couple weeks but tonight was able to get back to the project. The top rail is going to be a flowing curve, so needed to create a jig for the glue-up. Step (1): glued two 3/4 inch plywood pieces Step (2): cut into oval to match top railStep (3): cut 2×4 into pieces to create curve to which the top rail will be glued I still need to cut the angle on each of the pieces and affix them to the base. Next step: turning the spindles!
