My daughter Amelia and I will be working through this project together to learn several skills together that will be beneficial to us in the future. She is a home schooled child, and we saw this as a great opportunity to learn blogging, woodworking, and writing together. Amelia is 9 years old, and she loves collecting natural items. One day while browsing on wikipedia, I came across this beautiful 17th century cabinet known as a cabinet of curiosities. The illustration below shows a painting by Domenico Remps from the 1690s. These were built to house fantastic articles from the natural world. We decided this would be a great opportunity to work on a project together that Amelia could store natural objects she collects on our hiking trips.

We plan to design the cabinet on sketchup, build it using hand tools liberally, and blog about the experience.

Sounds like a very cool father/daughter project, and she’ll learn a craft that hopefully she’ll carry with her as she grows.
