My son is doing a project for a school competition and a couple of months ago he came across some photos of the Blacker House chair and fell in love with it. He is a big fan of the Greene and Greene style and is currently reading books on the history of the Greene and Hall brothers.

Here’s the problem his project has to be complete in March. We have spent hours searching the web and everything I find is incomplete and very inconsistent. We contacted some people on the web that we know have build this chair and received some information that was helpful but the more we learned the more questions we had. We did not want to bug people with a whole list of questions so we just jumped in with both foot and said whatever we create will be our version of the blacker house chair. I have no idea if we are even close to the original but most people we are showing won’t know the different. The first problem was we had to come up with something that we have to skill to build. I am a amateur woodworker and Jalen just turned 14 so this will be a challenge.

One of the restrictions of the competition is that it can be no larger than 36” x 36” x 36”. We had to lower the back a little to make this work.

We started by mocking up a prototype in poplar.
