no previous part Part 1 of Making wooden dowel with a router series Part 2: How it is done »

I have recently started a new project that requires walnut dowel so I set about coming up with an idea to make perfect dowel every time.
The video shows my router clamped upside down in the wood vise and the square piece of walnut being fed through a neat fitting hole while being spun at high speed with a drill.
The secret is to have a neat fitting entry hole before the straight cut router cutter and an exit hole after the cutter that is 1/64” bigger than the size of dowel that is required.
It works brilliantly and I use a digital caliper/vernier to measure the finished product to get the exact size every time.
It took about 5 minutes to make the jig and a couple of minutes to cut 3 lengths of dowel.
See the link below. I’m having trouble getting the video from photbucket.

Ditto, ’jonesy. Also, what is the specs of the input material? You mentioned square but to what degree was it prep’d, if it was. How would your methodology hold up for larger dowels… eg. 1/2” through 1 1/2”
