Looking for wood carving gouge recommendations - 8 replies

I am wanting to add some texture to my wood turned platters and bowls as well as spoon carvings. Are there any recommendations for a small set under $50 or under $100?

Lathe Riser blocks or outboard turning tool rest - 10 replies

I have a large Harbor Freight lathe, but I’m still finding myself limited to the 12” or less. Has anyone on here used riser blocks to raise up the capacity on the lathe itself? It comes with an outboard turning tool rest, but it’s not the safest feeling tool rest. Any recommendations for an aftermarket one or plans to build one...

Whisk turning kit - 6 replies

Ok, I’m seeing all types of hardware for various wood turning kits, but I haven’t been able to find a whisk kit. Does anyone have a good source they go to?

Black jack oak bowls - 3 replies

I’m about to cut down quite a few black jack oak trees on my father’s land. Has anyone turned a bowl or anything else using this type of wood? I’m curious because in Oklahoma, most people just call it garbage wood.

Joining acrylic and wood for turning - 9 replies

I’m looking at using acrylic and either walnut or oak for a few wood turning pieces. Has anyone ever joined them together? I’ve googled and found a pretty wide range of methods, but nothing that says for sure it will work. I’m looking at doing a lamp with alternating layers to filter the light, as well as a few bowls with layers.

Craft show display shelving and tags - 5 replies

I was wondering if anyone has a good source for Personalized tags/labels for woodworking projects. I want the craft show displays to look more professional. I’m wanting something in the Kraft paper style. Also, I’ve been looking through wire shelving units to use for table top displays and tall shelves for my bowls and vases. Just...

Wooden plate finishing questions - 5 replies

I am looking into making a few one off plate and serving wear sets this year. I would like to do a few contrasting features like either a painted or charred rim to the plates. Or even a painted outside of the bowl. I would normally finish with a mineral oil/ beeswax blend. But to protect the paint and still leave the plates food safe, what would...

Pressure pots and vacuum chambers for wood turning - 3 replies

I am looking to buy/build a pressure pot and vacuum chamber for stabilizing and casting blanks for wood turning. Are there any recommendations for a brand to buy or stay away from. Any specific post that would help me if I did one DIY? Also, is there a specific PSI that works best for casting? I’ve seen a few videos that say it’s fin...

Pen turning supplies questions - 2 replies

I am buying a new lathe soon for bigger items. I would like to use my small lathe for pens, rolling pens and smaller items. I’m brand new to pen turning though, so I’m a little lost on what I need to have for the turning and construction processes. I’ve seen a ton of videos, but it seems everyone uses a different variety of equ...

14" Band saw reviews - 6 replies

I’m comparing several 14” band saws currently. Craftsman, WEN, Grizzly, Rikon, and Shop Fox. I’m hoping to get a good resaw capacity, decently strong motor, and a common blade size. Does anyone have a particular experience to keep me away from one or the other? I personally like Grizzly all around, but I’m not certain it&...

Is 4/4 too thin for a desktop - 14 replies

I’m looking at making a desktop out of either Curly maple or some crazy colored poplar. I found a great deal on 4/4 in both. The base is going to be a cantilevered set of legs with a stretcher running across the back. Threaded inserts in the desk top with slotted holes in the legs. Is 4/4? too thin for a long term desk top though? I don...

Harbor Freight Lathe Chuck - 11 replies

I haven’t been able to find a solid answer on this, but I’m trying to budget for a large Harbor Freight Lathe and a chuck to replace my small lathe. Does anyone know the thread on the Harbor Freight lathe? And Yes I know it’s not the best lathe, but I have limited money for it currently and honestly don’t want to spend a ...

MCS 1000 wood lathe - 6 replies

I bought a cheap wood lathe from a friend to start getting into turning. It has 4 speeds, but the lowest speed does not seem to spin any of the pieces at all. I’m wondering if anyone has worked with this lathe or any other lathe where the belt has to be moved for different speeds. Does tension or anything else play into the motor not spinn...

Woodturning ideas - 13 replies

So I picked up an inexpensive lathe from a friend. Made my own carbide tools. Practiced turning a few tool handles, some off center turning on a random spindle, and also glued up some bowl blanks. What are everyone’s favorite things to turn though? Bowls look like they will be fun, but I also want to make some things to sell, so maybe roll...

Safest bit for pattern routing - 3 replies

I love to do different designs on my cutting boards or even pattern routing some designs to fill with epoxy on table tops. These patterns tend to go across the end grain and long grain with the patterns and rounds. The standard Freud straight edge pattern routing bit is scary at times if it catches. I’ve seen reviews for the Big Daddy bit,...

Butcher block joinery - 2 replies

I have a ton a scrap wood of various species that I’m interested in making a butcher block table with. I’ve done a few projects like this before, but I always seem to have a gap here and there between the butt joints. I added a few links below that show the overall style of the top, but you can even see some gaps there too. Any sugge...

Best starting lathe and tool questions - 3 replies

I’m hoping to purchase a lathe soon and trying to decide what to buy. It looks like I’ll be in for the cost of the lathe, a decent chuck, a few attachments, and the tools. Any recommendations for any of these 4 would be greatly appreciated. From YouTube videos I’ve seen the Harbor Freight large lathe seems fairly decent as a st...

Dovetail table top - 7 replies

Had an idea cross my mind this week about using two slabs of different species and color for a table top. Instead of a traditional glue up, I am thinking about making a large interlocking dovetail seam. Any suggestions or concerns on an idea like this? I plan on gluing together, but possibly highlighting the seam by carving it out some.

Best two sided tape for templates - 12 replies

I was wondering what others use for sticking router templates to the project. I picked up some double sided carpet tape but it’s thick and not completely steady.
