New Bathroom Cabinets

I built these bathroom cabinets to replace some hastily done shelves that where put in by the builder. The project quickly expanded to consume any free money in the checking account.. installing crown molding, repairing some puppy-chewed trim, new paint, new light fixtures, new sink, and I am currently working on a matching frame for the sink’s mirror. I am broke, but damn that bathroom looks nice.

The cabinet is 3/4 finished plywood, doors are popular with mdf inserts. Everything is completely overbuilt, in the event of a hurricane the house may collapse but I should at least still have these cabinets.

Thanks again to my Dad, without his help this project would still be some oddly shaped scraps of plywood.

Refining a design

I’ve enjoyed making these boards as gifts for the season, and they have provided me with the unexpected opportunity to refine the design, while practiceing my basic woodworking skills. I’ve added the sliding dovetail to attach the handle to the board. It’s my first all wood joint and after making 4 of them now I’m starting to get results I like.

The boards in the photo are Cocobolo/Maple, and Walnut/Maple. I’ve been staring at the Cocobolo in the local woodworking store for months now, every time shaking my head deciding to pass on such an expensive board. This last week I spotted a 1lf board in the cut bin so I splurged and picked it up. What a fun wood to work with, so dramatic when it’s finished.

Still have ideas for variations on these boards, changes you could make to the cutting board side. Plaid or herringbone patterns, engraving around the handles and such. Not going to making any more for the time being, after a month of making small things I’m really looking to try something big next.

Thanks for checking out my latest project.

Boredom + Spare 2x4's =

After making about a dozen small knot burr puzzles for gifts a buddy dared me to make the largest puzzle I could. Can’t let a perfectly good dare like that go by unanswered, and this was the result. The fit and finish is horrendous but on a project this goofy it really doesn’t matter.

My kids where kind enough to model the puzzle for the photo.

Small Christmas gifts

Still trying my best to get a few gifts made in the workshop. This is my third attempt at a cutting board design. The first design was an end grain checker board that was “ok”, the second design is now in the scrap wood pile. These turned out alright.

The Puzzles have been fun to work on as well. The bigger one is glued and pegged together, the smaller ones are cut on the scroll saw.
