I'm a retired Professor and have played around with carving and woodworking for most of my life. What I lack in training and talent I try to make up for in enthusiasm.

Thanks to your suggestions I think I ‘ve found the tool that will do the job. Merlin, a little 2” chainsaw and solid grinder deal that will let me rough these things out. Thanks to all.
I also think it will help with my next project. I’ve got a 15’ spruce pole that I’ve had up on blocks for three years. It’s going to become a totem pole representing my familiy and my home. Most of my in-laws are from Alaska and i’ve got that theme to start from. If anyone has done this kind of thing I’d appreciate any advice. I’ve got books from there about the meaning of the symbols but I’m more used to working in carving small pieces.
You guys are really great.
