Hi, I'm Jerry and I live in Canberra Australia. I play music (fiddle) - mainly Celtic folk/Irish and am very much a hobby woodworker. I've made a few small things, but got more serious recently when I built a dining table from an old ribbon gum tree that burnt outside our house during the 2003 Canberra Bushfire... The house was okay but we lost the garden - close enough for my taste! My workshop is a garage - the car stays in the car port - and I have a fair tool set for a hobbyist - last big purchase was a 6" long bed jointer to smooth up the lumber from the tree, although it does much more than that!

Welcome to Lumberjocks. The projects are an inspiration, the information is priceless and the people are supportive. The only problem is, the site can get addictive.

God Bless

Welcome Jerry. You have found the right place for woodworking. A great group of people willing to help. Looking forward to see more of your projects and comments. Work safe in the shop and don’t forget to use pushsticks.

Thanks for the warm welcome trifern and Ron – yeah I always use pushsticks – like someone once said: “if it roars and has sharp teeth it probably eats meat” :-) As a fiddle player and hobby woodworker for 30-odd years I tend to keep my fingers away from stuff that bites! I have great respect for the circular saw and the jointer, and importantly I also wear a 2micron mask when sanding or doing anything that involves sawdust – I think that is the most under-rated danger in the home shop these days. The dust-bee-gone fits well around my beard – unlike most other masks – I’ll probably do a review of that one soon.

I have yet to master the art of sharpening and of making close tolerance joints – even mortise and tenon, but will be looking to take a couple of classes over the coming year to improve my skill level.
