Church Doors

Built some new doors for a church. Made from African mahogany with a cabernet stain and spar urethane on top. Had to replace the trim around the outside of the door too. Used the same hardware just cleaned it up with a wire wheel. Damage was done by a drunk driver.
It was a bit of a challenge as these are the first doors i’ve ever built. I could have used more clamps.

Mallet Swap 2012 for CosmicSniper

This is the mallet i made for CosmicSniper for the recent mallet swap we had on the Mallets of Your Dreams thread. Thanks to CosmicSniper for the pictures since i was in a hurry to send it to him that i didn’t take any pictures.

The head is made of Ipe wood; a piece i had left over from building a deck. It started out as a cut off from a 4×4 post which i turned on a lathe and then ripped the sides off on the table saw so it wasn’t so square. Then drilled a 1” mortise for the handle.

The handle is made from a piece of Black Locust from a tree that blew over in the same yard (7 years ago) in which i built the deck (missed the deck). I split the black locust down to a manageable size and turned it on the lathe also. The dark rings on the end of the handle are burned on by holding shavings to it while it still spun in the lathe and the lines are cut in and then burned with a piece of thin metal. Wedged with a slice of walnut.

Both woods are extremely hard and hold up to the elements very well. i had to hone my chisels several times making this mallet.

I burnished both the head and the handle with shavings while on the lathe and then gave it a tung oil finish.
It was a fun project and a joy to make and i’m glad it gave a fellow LJ such delight to open on Christmas morning.
