Is there a 12 step program for Boxes?

Cause…I think I’m addicted.

This is my latest. Like most I make….the wood is scavenged from shipping pallets. I liked the way these two woods looked together.

I let the Rookie come out in me a little on this one. What should have been “assembly spacers”, got glued in by mistake. I don’t know what I was thinking. The pine on the inside should have been used temporally just to get the hinge pin alignment, and the front handle slot cut, but like an idiot, I glued them in. I should have used double sided tape to hold them, until I didn’t need them anymore.

Incidentally….the recipient won’t notice, or care, and I won’t point out the mistake to them, but I think Y’all can keep a secret. :-)

I like boxes.

Sometimes you just see a piece of wood…and have to scrounge it. The lid of this box in a former life, was a board in a pallet. I did have to edge glue two pieces, to get the width I needed. The sides are some Walnut left over from a previous project, and the splines are whatever I could find laying around that came close to matching the top. The finish is three coats of thinned poly..and one final coat full strength.

I love lookin’ at other peoples projects, so it’s only fair that I add one of my own every now and then. Thanks for lookin’.

Another recycled pallet

Found another pretty pallet at work, and couldn’t let it live it’s life out as a shipping vessel. :-)

I have no idea what kind of wood this is, but it was just too pretty not to use. I love the knots, worm holes, and even the sapwood. I’m not a huge fan of “lift off” lids, I’d rather have it hinged, but after I cut the profile in the top, it was just too thin to accept hinges, so lift off it is.

Thanks for lookin’.

Walnut Mantle Clock, Wedding gift.

A friend of mine is getting married in a couple of weeks. He’s the same age as my grown son, and I half raised this boy, he was always around the house. I figured buying him a wedding present, wouldn’t mean as much as something I built, so here’s a couple of pics of the clock I built for him and his new Bride.

I wanted to keep it fairly simple, so I didn’t use any secondary woods, and I made the drawer pull as simple as I could think to make it. Only extravagance is the bracket feet, and the do-hicky on the top.

Anyway….this is what it looks like, I think he’ll be satisfied.

From pallet, to box

Well….I’ve been a member here for a while, but only in a lurkin’ kind of way.

I figure it’s time to join the party, and I guess posting this project is as good a way as any to get started.

I’m pretty tight when it comes to the woodworking budget….so when I see a pallet with some decent looking lumber in it at work, it comes home with me. In the first picture, you can see my method of harvesting the wood from the pallet. I don’t waste time trying to pull nails, nor do I take the chance of missing one and the steel getting into my blades. I just cut the flats from between the runners, and throw the rest in the kindling pile. My fireplace doesn’t mind a few nails in the kindling. :-)

The second picture is all the flats from this one pallet. As you can see…not all of it is usable. Some is just too warped, too checked, or too thin to be of any use, so it finds it’s way to the kindling pile as well. The third picture is what I was able to use. This is it after jointing, and planing.

Pictures four, five, and six are the box I made from the pallet. It’s the first box I’ve made, with an inset lid and pins for hinges. It was a learning experience for sure. Credit must go to member “Andy”, cause without his tutorial, I probably never would have figured out how to make the lid work.

The box ended up being about 13” x 8”, and about 2 1/2” high. I lined the inside with black velvet material. The finish is about 3 coats of Minwax poly, thinned 50/50 with mineral spirits and wiped on.

Well…there you go. I’ve spent so much time looking at other peoples projects on this site, I just figured it was time too post one of my own.

Thanks for looking, and I always welcome comments on how I could have improved.
