Sawstop sues Bosch

I own a Sawstop PCS. I love it and think it is a great saw. I do not own a Bosch saw. But, I am disappointed in Mr. Gass/Sawstop for suing Bosch. I understand business and the concept of protecting intellectual property. However, Sawstop pushes the idea their saws are all about safety. This is pushed as the driving force. Money is secondary. If that is truly the case, why are they suing another company that has technology that can help woodworker safety? Either be honest or drop the suit. Just my two cents. I am putting this out on a public forum to give a little pushback for, hopefully, a strong response for Sawstop to see.

I can see the logic in the suit. It doesn’t necessarily mean that they intend to stop Bosch, but maybe just to share in any profits Bosch will be earning with the Sawstop patented concept. It would be illogical to expect Sawstop to let themselves be run out of business by another (much larger) company using their patent. Of course it remains to be seen if Bosch is indeed infringing on it.

*update: It seems that Gass is a lawyer and likes to sue tool companies, first for not wanting to use his technology and now for patent infringement. Good luck. Personally I would never pay the price for this technology to protect myself, but If I operated a shop with employees I would consider it.

Hopefully some other major cabinet saw manufacturers will one day be able to build with Bosch’s technology. It sounds even better than Sawstops, because the blade isn’t ruined if the saw trips. You only have to buy the replacement cartridge.
That should eliminate the need for a different dado brake vs. standard blade brake.
