So I was assigned the task of designing and building shelving units for the fireplace at my girlfriends house. I have been sketching prints all day and finally converted them onto my computer. Please take a look and let me know what you think. I plan on using pocket hole joints (using the kreg jig) and filling them in as the units will be painted white and wood/ grain/ joint detail will be covered. The first picture can be considered void because the dimensions are not correct to what I want; it was my first rough sketch to get a general idea.

Your comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Nick, I think you are on the right track. Here is a link to a set that I built for an old neighbor of mine a while back. The only thing I can see different in your approach is the complete fireplace mantel. I only went with the top section of the mantel.

I look forward to seeing your progress as I am getting ready to do this again in my family room.
