Ned – I had the same problem and will offer two solutions.

1. Use only boiled linseed oil diluted one to one with mineral spirits followed by poly.

2. Give cherry a sealer coal of Zinser’s Seal Coat diluted with 3 pirts alcohol to one part Seal coat. Let dry at least 30 minutes then put on the yellow can stain of your choice (I often use cherry). Let dry at least overnight then follow this with poly.
