Gout

Hi Fellow Lumberjocks

I have been laid up now for two weeks with gout in the left foot. Never had it in my life. I would not wish this on anybody. Well maybe one or two. I have had pain in my life before but never for so long of a period. My wife kids me, that a real man would drag it behind him, NOT! Everytime I lift up my foot or straighten it out when I sit down after standing or walking it takes my breath away. Been seeing the doctor for the past two week and go back tomorrow. My wife always tells me things happen for a reason. This has been a turning point in my life. Stopped eating alot of red meat and went to more fish, chicken and turkey. Stopped drinking pop and started drinking cherry juice, water and tea. Eat a lot of fruit and vegtables. I found out there is more than corn and banans. Started eating a lot less, loosing weight and feel better. Go figure!. I am going to be a lean, mean, sex machine! Like most of the guys my age we were raised on home made breads, fried meat and potatos.

Does anyone have any suggestion on reliefing this pain, grandmas old remedy, medications you have taken? Any information would be greatly appriciated. A prayer for me would be greatly appriciated as well.

God Bless
tom

I have nothing to offer, as far as a remedy.

I’d just like to wish you speedy healing!

Tom,
I’d like to also wish you a speedy recovery. I’m sure things do happen for a reason and I’m glad you have changed your habits to a more healthy lifestyle. I’ll the bet the doc will sign a nice prescription to help ease the pain.

Hi Buddy. Yes I do have a suggestion only because my next door neighbor in Florida had the very same thing we put a label on it called gout. His doctor recommended along with the diet change to eat six or eight cherries each day. You can freeze them as well like the grapes I love this way. You don’t need many but in short order this was said to help relieve the discomfort and pain. Let me know if it works for you. Bye and God Bless.

We can’t diagnose you over the net but if you have Gout there are a couple of pretty good pills you can take that get the pain and swelling down real fast.
I know it’s murder seeing a Doc over in the states but you need to find out what it is for sure and then get treatment.
Next to kidney stones this “arthritis” is one of the most agravitng pains you can have.

Up here they are not that expensive either.

Cheers

There is pretty good spread on Gout listed here
along with some of the traditional medications.
It’s possible that the newer ones are more expensive and I for one hate to be first nowdays. <g>

Hope you get better!!!!
I’ve had Gout off and on since ‘75 so I’ll give you my 2 cents. The pain is severe don’t let anyone tell you it isn’t I had a doc tell me that he worked in a VA Hospital right after WWII before there were no meds for Gout. He walked by a ward that had nothing in it but Gout patients and they were all screaming, enough about the pain. There are are drugs now to alleviate the pain, INDOMETHICIN in my case is the best if the doc hasn’t given you any ask about, that it really works for me. I have to go now but there in information links below.

Tom, I hate to hear things like this. You should be enjoying time in your shop not being laid up like this. I wish you a speedy recovery and hope you get to feeling better soon. Keep us posted on your progress.

I have two friends who have had this and both got relief by drinking cherry juice concentrate. A quart will run you $20 but you just take two ounces a day with some water to dilute it. Hope you get relief soon!!

I don’t know of any magic bullet, but as a migrineur with daily headaches for a decade, I can tell you the first step in pain management is to decide to not let it control your life. When you have swelling and that sort of thing, you have to take care of it. Just plain old pain, get up and go anyway. I have a headache most of the time I’m posting on LJ, when I’m working and when I’m laughing. I have arthritis in both knees and use braces to walk more than a few steps. I do hope it goes away and you get better. I’ll propose a toast, “Here’s to a pain free day as soon as tomorrow!! :~))”

Well, like others have said, not a medical professional….but wikipedia’s gout page includes a TON of good advice, such as changes to diet, including the inclusion of cherry to the diet, which did help in one study. But there’s a ton of other possibilies, depending on the cause of your gout, which the article also covers. Reduce your fatty food intake, and lower your protein intake, amongst them.

You need to watch your vegetable intake as well. Peas and asparagus are also bad for gout. I have a touch of it myself and usually take 4 advils every 3 hours. That tempers it. Good luck and get well.

Tom thanks for the recent comment on my bookcase mantle. sorry for your “Royal” disease. I hate that for you, the cherries are the only thing I have heard about helping. I hope you bounce back soon.

Sorry to hear about your gout, I feel your pain as I have had 3 gout attacks over the past few years. My doctor did prescribe one painkiller he said might work for gout but my stomach could not handle it. Trying to run to the bathroom on a gout swollen ankle was no fun at all! I found that soaking the gouty joint in hot water helped with the pain, advil and the like did nothing at all for me. It’s been a year since my last serious attack, I changed my diet as you have done and also try to eat more dairy. I haven’t heard of cherries helping, they are my favourite fruit but are as rare as hen’s teeth here in Thailand.

Tom, years ago I would get Gout, also in my left foot. Bad, Bad, Bad. Not a good thing to have. Since I quite eating liver I have not had a real bad bout of Gout. When I feel it coming on I take a perscribed 800mg tablet of Ibuprofen three times a day for a few days. So far, so good. Hope you beat it. Ask your wife to tell you the real reason that you have this. Wives are so helpful. We must listen to them.

Tom:
I had it (gout) as bad as you are describing it. I went total vegan for about a month, within a week the pain was completely gone. No red meat, no chicken, milk (I’m allergic to that anyway even though I grew up working on a dairy), cheese, etc. All animal protein causes it to flare up on me. I will eat a piece of fish about once a month.
One good thing that came of it was that I lowered my chloresterol level by more than 1/3 and it was not high to start with. I also had a problem with ganglion cysts that ocurred regularly and one in the palm of my hand started wrapping itself around the tendon in the palm of my hand which required surgery to remove. My doctor swears that the two have nothing to do with each other, but every time I started back on animal protein, the cysts would return. I have been eating this way all the time for the past five years and the gout and cysts have not returned. I kow this is radical for someone raised on meat and taters, but boy the pain of gout, side effects of the medications, and falling asleep after a meal is just not worth it to me.
Hope you get over the pain.

Tom,
Zyloprim (allopurinol) was the prescription med fix used when I was still a RN. Gout is the result of uric acid crystals in the joint space. Diet does ameliorate the formation of these crystals, and lifestyle changes are the long term solution, but this med was the pharmacological treatment, in my day.

I would first like to thank all the people who responded to this blog. Your information, recommendations, concerns and Prayers were greatly appreceated.

Secondly, I am happy to report that yesterday was the first day that I have not experienced severe pain in my foot in over two Weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have also lost 5 pounds last week by eating in moderation and eating healthier foods. A change in life style and attitude has a lot to do with it as well.

God Bless

Congratulation on winning the shadow contest.

I clicked on your home page, & discovered you had the gout.

Maybe winning this prize will help ease the pain.

Take care.

I know a few folks who have had gout and they all got relief from eating cherries. I don’t know if it was 6 to 8 but Bing cherries did best.

i hope your still doing well tom, Ive had bad back problems and neuropathy for some time now..and it has severely impacted my life, the thing I’m talking about is dealing with pain and the mental anguish that this has on you, it sounds like you’ve gotten some good advice on the gout, but if it flairs up again, then you will be in the same boat again, keeping a positive attitude and do what you can really helps..even if its 30 minutes in the shop..if you can…if you cant then just remember the lord promises us to always be with us, when he suffered in Gethsemane he took upon him all our pain and sickness, and knows how to succor his people, stay close to him, there is something to be learned from all of these things we go through, just do your best, and let your family be your leaning post, you have terrific grandchildren from what i see in your pictures..my prayers and thoughts are with you…make sawdust when you can..and most important, listen to your wife..grizzman

I had regular episodes of gout for about 10 years before a sensible doctor prescribed allopurinol (I say sensible because his attitude was, “you need to lose some weight, but in the meantime, you’re tearing up your joints, so take this”). The only relief I was ever able to find was a tightly laced shoe. Once you get the shoe on in the morning, put your foot up so the blood drains out, lace it up tight, and don’t take it off again until you go to bed. I’ve since lost the weight, and it hasn’t come back (knock on wood). Best of luck to you.
