What does it SOUND like??

I was thinking (as I plot tonight’s shop time) about how much I like the sound that my tools make when they’re plowing through wood.

And … wouldn’t it be cool if we were to have a thread where people put up vids of the sounds that their tools make?

Well … here are a few from my basement. Sorry. I was bored ;-)

1) The Harbor Freight 2HP DC

2) The Ridgid thickness planer

3) The Bosch 4100 contractor’s saw

4) The Ridgid JP0610 jointer-planer

5) The Grizzly G0555X band saw

6) I FORGOT the router table!!

So … if anybody has some cool sounding machines … I, for one, would like to hear ‘em :-)

Heh, I have several of the exact same tools you do… My HF DC is still not hooked up, but part of my wife’s x-mas gift to me was to have an electrician come out and run some new lines, so hopefully next week I’ll be making some noise of my own :)

I assume you recorded those sounds in a format usable by Audacity, or whatever your preferred digital audio editor is. Then with appropriate manipulation, perhaps with input, after soliciation with whatever inducement seems appropriate to gain more sound files…...........manipulating frequencies and characteristics, and with input from those with lyrical and perhaps more poetic bent…....a most appropriate anthem for Lumberjocks could be synthesized, which after some extortion I am sure we could convince Martin to play when opening the LJ home page.

Are we on…................?

Neil, these are interesting videos but the one observation I would have to make is that you have waaaaay too much time on your hands. LOL

I couldn’t hear anything… I put my ear protection on whenever a machine is running… but the pictures were nice!

Too much time on my hands? Well … uh … yeah ;-)

I assumed that was understood!

Jimi: Cool! You’ll have fun. I’m pretty impressed with that little HF number, for the money. I do like the Woodcraft cyclonic garbage can lid bit, too. Extra capacity. Better separation. Probably virtually eliminates risk to the impeller of bigger pieces bashing into it.

JimB: I guess it could be done in tracks, but … out of respect for (and kissing up to) Martin … I’ll try to set it to the tune of “Nad Tatrou sa blýska”—the Slovak National Anthem ;-)

And … I did just get back from a couple hours progress in the man cave. I look like a Baltic Birch Yeti, about now :-)

Interesting Neil, I see a lot of people using those metal trash can lid separators, and I wondered how they perform considering they’re so cheap. I may need to add one of those to my list so that I at least have something till I build a proper cyclone.

JimB: we’re going to need a new marketing approach, then. So far … nobody else is contributing ;-)

Jimi: I think I paid about $29 for the lid, and … I dunno … maybe $15 for the trash can. It takes up some additional square footage, though. Remember that.

Neil, that sounds like you got a working shop. I like the idea of making a video of what is sounds like, its make people think you is working. :)
