THE DISAPPEARANCE OF NBEENER

I need a favor … and I’m truly coming to you all hat in hand—not a comfortable position for me.

For those that never knew my story, and those who are curious about how it all ended up, it’s linked right below.

Over the last few months, I was able to put hyperlinks in the story, allowing you to click directly to some of the documents that support that particular part of the story … if you’re interested.

It’s all true. I never did anything to anybody. I just needed to be able to sleep in my first-ever, brand new home in Fort Collins, Colorado.

And I lost everything—my home, my life’s savings, and my health. Literally.

My health is now poor. For a few years, life became nothing more than TV and walking the dog, and now the Infectious Disease docs at Stanford Medical Center tell me I have to stop walking the dog.

I’m still watching all the woodworking videos that I can (on the big flat-screen TV) ... to keep my head in the game. On paper … I’m Krenov or Maloof :-)

But … without those fluid-filled, custom, prosthetic scleral (contact) lenses … I can’t get my vision to correct nearly well enough or stably enough to safely do actual woodworking. Neither can I tolerate the amount of ambient light it would require. I spend over 90% of my time in a darkened, humidified living room.

All of my possessions—my bicycles, my shop, my motorcycle, ... everything—are still in storage almost five years after losing my house. I’ve been living out of a backpack since June 2012.

Here’s the favor: I’d be profoundly grateful to any who would reach out to the editors of the local papers, just asking them to cover my story.

That’s it.

My hope is that it might help somebody else. We have to raise awareness that there are lots of kinds of disabilities that you just can’t see. “Disability” doesn’t only mean “uses a wheelchair.”

And the truth … really needs to come out.

So far, all of these papers have refused. Maybe some outside pressure will persuade them.

All you’d have to do is tell them that you’d urge them to cover what really happened to Neil Brooks in Fort Collins. Probably good to include these references:

OR: Google: Destruction of a Disabled Man in Colorado

Here are their email addresses:

KathyJack@coloradoan.com, lgustus@coloradoan.com, JStahla@Reporter-Herald.com, ggriffin@denverpost.com, lcolacioppo@denverpost.com, susan@coloradoindependent.com, greeneindenver@gmail.com, lshapley@denverpost.com, kdale@denverpost.com, patricia.calhoun@westword.com

You can just send one single email to the whole bunch of them.

And here’s the critical thing about this favor: nobody has to stick their neck out in any way. No need to vouch for me or take a position about what did or didn’t happen. You’d just be asking them to cover the story. The rest … is up to the facts.

And I’m entirely comfortable with the facts.

I’d be really grateful.

I mean … REALLY grateful.

Neil

I read through the writings, and you have a very compelling story, Neil! My wife and moved from a development with an HOA and, while we didn’t have the issues you had, we did have to deal with similar attitudes and “cliques”. Sorry to hear about all the troubles you and your wife experienced.

What else are pals for than to help a fellow woodworker out?
I’ve done as you have asked and I hope it helps.
And, you are on my family’s’ prayer list.
Good luck man.

Done deal, Neal. I hope this helps generate a positive response from even just one of these local writers.

Cheers -

Thanks so much to those who’ve read the blog post, emailed the newspapers, or both.

I know there are millions of millions of happy homeowners living great lives in beautiful homes in peaceful HOA’s. I haven’t lost sight of that.

But I’m also aware of the potential for harm …. how easily it can turn into “Lord of the Flies …” when the HOA Board of Directors doesn’t have any grown ups on it.

Again … my thanks.

What a story, I really feel with you for many reasons.
(I am retired due to cronical pain and suffer from mild ptsd).
Wish life will lighten up for you and send you warmth and my best thoughts,
