Poplar and Pine Frame

This is a new design…I had found some naturally coloured poplar at Lowe’s and just love the purples, blacks, and greens in the wood. I had also found a rare diseased pine board. So, I laminated them both to pine, used natural stain to enhance the colours of the poplar, rounded the poplar, and kept the pine unstained and square. I thought by changing the texture of each wood, would keep the woods segregated while adding to the photo. I used a poly gloss for finish coat.

Cedar Display Cabinet

I originally began this project as a donation to my Church for auction, but did not get it finished in time, so it was shelved. I just finished it last week. The whole thing is put together with glue, dowels and strategic dates. I used natural stain and a ploy gloss clear. The glass is antique bubbled (forget what it is actually called. The doors have rare earth magnets to keep the doors closed. I think this is rustic at it’s finest…love the colours and look.

Red Cedar Mantle

This mantle is my first. Made of 6” thick rough cut red cedar. I cleared off all the bark, even the deep crevice. I filled the crevices on top to the same level as the surface, and on the front, just enough so cleaning would be much easier without taking away from the character of the wood. The styles or uprights are 3” square finished with the same finish. The mantle is actually “hung” rather than attached to the wall. This way there is minimal damage to the wall and can be removed if need be. The whole project took me approx. 25 hours of solid labour. This, I think, is my favourite project thus far.

This is a 6 foot cedar chest made for a king size bed. Knotty pine was used for the shell and unfinished aromatic cedar lines the interior. 5 inch bun feet hold it up off of the floor and make it much easier to move.

Design is on pressure points on the shelves. Dowels were use to keep styles in place. Made from knotty pine and stained Min Wax Cherry.

I did nothing but use other busted up frames to rebuild this one. I left and blemishes, paint, stain, and just used a satin poly on it, new glass and photo matts.
