Very little shop time anymore- we have 6 kids in the house; our youngest child is 5, and two of our older kids are 17 and 18, but developmentally disabled and require constant supervision. It’s impossible to work safely in the shop if they are present because I can’t split my concentration between keeping them safe and keeping myself safe.
Meanwhile, the house is falling down around my shoulders. I need to paint the place inside and out, rebuild/replace the kitchen cabinets, lay down new flooring, replace the siding on the back half of the house, hang some fluorescent fixtures in the back room, and replace 3 exterior doors. The fence is decayed and falling down, the gophers, ground squirrels and rabbits have undermined the property, and now the dogs are carrying ticks into the house. When I have the time to fix stuff, I don’t have the money; when I have the money, I got no time!
But you know what? Our house is full of love and laughter! My wife, kids, and grandkids love me, I have a good job, I’m in good health, and by golly, I’m truly blessed. Life is good. Not easy, but really, really good.
