Overview
There are a number of people who have indicated they would like to know more about what it takes to turn pens. There are quite a few very good pen turners who are members of our community. My intent is go get an overview out there to encourage more people to give it a try. I’m hoping some of the other pen turners will add to this and we can get more people turning. It really is quite simple and very rewarding.
What I like about turning pens is the ability to finish a ...

Hi Folks,
WayneC posted a great blog entry on Turning a Pen with outstanding instruction and resources. Using Wayne’s blog and resources, I started turning a few pens and have found a lot of enjoyment in a quick little project in the shop. I have limited shop time and while I stall on a large entertainment centre as a feature in our home theatre, as well as trying to find the time for the summer entries, I’ve been spending some quality time with my lathe.
With the help of ...

OK. Let me start by saying that my shop is a disaster. More like a DIE-saster. You walk in and it’s much like a bad natual disaster, or war zone- and it’s actually gotten dangerous. I’ve lived out of those bucket buddies for years, and quite frankly, I just have never quite been able to get organized.
I like to do things with a certain amount of frugality... recycling everything I can and not buying new stuff. If I have it, and can use it, and it works, I’m OK ...

This is a repost of my inlay process. The original write up was created several years ago, but I figure it would be nice to add to the Lumberjocks archives. I will eventually do a video on this process, but until then, here is a pictorial from 2005.
The project is an ottoman tray. It will be a simple piece of 3/4 maple ply with a substantial solid padauk border. The inlay, is a simple interpretation of the sun. So here we go. It all starts with your design. Draw it out exactly how you w...

My next step has been taken and that is to cut out all the inside pieces with the starter holes. I have done many of these puzzles and normally I have cut them by simply cutting off a letter at a time. Besides the middle of the A’s and R’s and O’s and P’s a person does not even need to place a starter hole in the other places if you are to cut the letters out one at a time. In the letters L,L,I,G, if I were to have cut the letters OFF one at a time then these inside cu...

A few years back Fine Woodworking magazine did an article that gave me a new inspiration. That was to utilize space on a piece of furniture that would otherwise be wasted and install a secret compartment. Now I don’t have sensative government documents I am hiding nor do I have priceless pieces of art I am trying to hide nor secret documents that once I give it to the press will make us feel differently about, let’s say, Coca Cola. I just felt inspired to try a new kind of chal...

I thought I would try my hand at writing a blog here. This is a totally different way for me as far as patterns go. I am used to a pattern that is on a sheet of paper the size the object will be when done. and then you make copies and cut out the pieces of the paper pattern and place them on your wood. This pattern came like this. One sheet of paper NOT actual size. Then the pattern itself IS in pieces you need at the size they are suppose to be. When I first started this, a couple days ago, I ...

On the suggestion of a couple comments from juniorjock and dantheboxmaker, I decided to try my first blog…anywhere…ever. I don’t really know what I’m doing, so I hope this turns out.
Thanks to all who made the kind comments to my posting of this project. These are some of the steps I went through to make the “Frame / Panel Keepsake Box” at http://lumberjocks.com/projects/7096.
Frame/Panels:This box consists of five Frame/Panels (FP) – the top, and the four sides making the carcass....

I wrote this article/post/manual for a Technical Writing course I took this fall. Couldn’t think of any technical aspects of teaching, but luckily, woodworking came to my rescue. I borrowed heavily from Make magazine’s article on cigar-box making, but I got a little more specific (I hope), and well, added a modification page from some of the other guitars I made. Sorry, no pictures – but I think y’all will get the picture. If you have trouble, give a shout and I...
