Part 1: After a 21 year hiatus, I'm back!

977 days ago by MrMeasureTwice | 7 comments »

Twenty years ago was the last time I did any real woodworking. That was at NAS Moffett Field, where I was stationed as a Weapons System Technician on the Lockheed P-3C Orion aircraft. The base has a terrific wood shop and I treid to go as often as possible. Unfortunately, my hectic Navy life was less than conducive to long hours in the shop, so I did what I could. A year later I decided to leave the Navy. Since then I have only cut wood out of necessity and basic need, not for fun. So sad&...

Part 2: The beginning...

Good day fellow dusty chippers,Short entry here – thought you’d like to see what I started with in the garage – the big mess… The picture is midstream in moving stuff around to find stuff to throw away and give away. Since the beginning of the big purge, I’ve made 6 trips to Salvation Army (so far), put countless objects on the end of the driveway with FREE signs on them and furnished 1/2 of house for the new family across the street. OK, may 1/3… seriously...

Part 3: quick update, ramblings...

967 days ago by MrMeasureTwice | 0 comments »

Hi folks,Been trying to make progress in the shop every weekend. I have no evenings available during the week due to my work schedule and long commute. So, weekends are made for woodworking, or in my case, for getting ready to do woodworking. So far, progress has been good and steady until last weekend. Saturday was one of those days where I needed to really be a husband and give some focus to my wife and so I did. We had a nice time on Saturday and I even persuaded my beautiful wife to ac...

Part 4: As the garage turns (into a woodshop!)

953 days ago by MrMeasureTwice | 7 comments »

Over the weekend I made a lot of progress on the shop clearing out two more steel shelving units, leaving only one to clear out and move out. As part of the continued purging, I decided to dismantle my second Shopsmith, give away the bench (I love FREE signs on stuff – it’s how I get rid of SO much stuff!!!) from the Shopsmith. I am keeping my first Shopsmith, for now, but as I acquire more tools I begin to think that the 6 foot long by 30” wide machine is a huge space drain...

Part 5: Floor Plan for Shop - just a guess-timate

952 days ago by MrMeasureTwice | 10 comments »

Quick post here – 0400 comes awfully early… Here is my rough drawing of how I will lay out my shop. NOTES: ShopVac will be under the bench ShopSmith is questionable at this point, but it’s the only jointer I have right now, so it stays for now Brown rectangles with thick black border are workbenches Restricted area is immovable, lost space The purple area is the lazy susan that will hold the 4 tools as noted If you’ve got ideas, recommendations or ...

Part 6: First of three benches built

948 days ago by MrMeasureTwice | 3 comments »

What did I do on Christmas Eve? I BUILT A BENCH! Yesterday I hit Lowe’s and got the lumber, MDF, glue and screws for the first two of three benches I need to build. The first bench is now built and the pictures are below as well as posting my very first project! The purpose of this bench is to be determined until I put together the other two benches. Once I have them all built I can place them in various positions to see what will work the best in my long, narrow shop area. I̵...

Part 7: THe latest addition to the shop...

Today, I found a nice bandsaw for a good price and picked it up this morning. It’s not a Rikon or PowerMatic, but it will more than suffice for my needs at this time. Grizzly G0555 w/6” extension – this gives me about 10-12” of resaw capacity, so I can resaw the wood I have been collecting from broken furniture. Since I didn’t have to pay for shipping and sales tax and the accessories, it was quite a good deal for me. Here’s a picture of it in the ...

Part 8: The wall is up!!!

926 days ago by MrMeasureTwice | 5 comments »

Saturday… 0630… In the car heading to Lowe’s for the last few items needed to make the piece of my garage a real shop. Kind of like Pinocchio wanting to be a real boy – my 1/3 of the 3-car garage WANTS to be a woodshop, and I am the maker, Geppetto, who has been carefully, slowly (too slow) making that piece of the garage into a shop. Rich, my neighbor across the street, and, a “sheetrock guy” by trade, has offered to help my little piece of heaven becom...
