What did I do on Christmas Eve? I BUILT A BENCH!

Yesterday I hit Lowe’s and got the lumber, MDF, glue and screws for the first two of three benches I need to build. The first bench is now built and the pictures are below as well as posting my very first project!

The purpose of this bench is to be determined until I put together the other two benches. Once I have them all built I can place them in various positions to see what will work the best in my long, narrow shop area. I’ll be putting different machines on them and working out power distribution, dust collection routes, etc. before I commit to a specific configuration of the shop.

Anyway, here’s a series of photos from cutting the first of the four main legs to the final bench.

One fortunate side benefit of having the RaceDeck tiles – they are exactly 1 foot by 1 foot, and they’re perfectly square – when building a bench all alone, any advantage you can get – take it. These tiles were great for aligning the ends when I was getting ready to put in the 7 foot long spanners.

final dimensions: 7’=3” (L) x 35-1/2” (H) x 24” (D)

Anyway, here’s several pictures of the build…

Oops – sawdust in the coffee – aw, just more flavor!!! :

One set of legs and stretchers – ready to go… :

First of the 7’ stretchers – this is where the RaceDeck tiles became my alignment tool:

The table frame is glued and screwed and square – ready for first layer of the MDF:

First layer of MDF screwed down (not glued in case I need to replace the top) – ready for layer #2 – layer 2 gets glued and screwed:

Finished product (I’ll probably add shelves below to store equipment/tools):

Alright, I gotta get to bed before SANTA arrives – he’ll be pissed if he finds me up waiting for him!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!*

Thanks jim, much appreciated. Simple, but necessary item in the shop.
