Quick post here – 0400 comes awfully early…
Here is my rough drawing of how I will lay out my shop.
NOTES:- ShopVac will be under the bench
- ShopSmith is questionable at this point, but it’s the only jointer I have right now, so it stays for now
- Brown rectangles with thick black border are workbenches
- Restricted area is immovable, lost space
- The purple area is the lazy susan that will hold the 4 tools as noted
If you’ve got ideas, recommendations or see flaws in the layout, just let me know – I really want your input and experiences so I can learn from others.
Thanks,
Jim

Rearranged and added dimensions…

Jim: I am a REAL big fan of having the table saw close to the large door (I assume this is a single car garage bay?). Allows the table saw to handle longer/wider parts when cutting. That or having your table saw be mobile.
Without pictures though, it is really tough to get a handle on the space involved. Without dimensions, it is also hard to put perspective to the tools/space.

Hey jim, I once worked out of a 12×20 shed and built things people could not think could be done. I made it work. your only limits are the ones you put on yourself. Nice plans. Good luck!

I agree with Uncle_salty about the table saw close to the large door, and be sure you would have room to work full size sheet goods if you plan to use these. Like your lazy susan plan.

Uncle & Gerald – thanks for that recommendation – makes perfect sense, and, easy for me to rearrange. the “Lazy Susan” can go next to the door, slide the workbenches down towards the big door and move the table saw to other end.
77 – I hope to make beautiful and interesting things from that space and would be thrilled if I could impress folks with my handiwork.
I had dimensions in there and when I scaled the picture, it changed all my measurements. Grrrrr… I may need to try out Google’s sketch thing – maybe that will be better than SmartDraw – apparently, it’s a bit too smart for me. :-)

Oh, and it is a 10×24 one car garage, next to the 2-car section. Total 3 cars of space. One car gets parked, the rest is chewed up with my developing shop and 8 steel shelves holding a variety of stuff, food stores, etc.

Also, thoughts on a mobile work bench/vise? I have the exact same setup as you, and I’ve run out of room. One thing that I am making that will really give more more room is a flip top mobile stand for my planar and mitre saw. Also have you considered where you might add peg board, etc?

Lumber Rack—Darn good question – I am building the other two benches today, finally, and doing a lot of rearranging to sort out the actual locations.
Also, I’v discovered Google SketchUp and am now redrawing all the tools, or finding ones others have drawn, and will put up some new-fangled drawings in the next couple of days.
I love the idea of the fliptop mobile bench and I have a magazine with a plan for it, I think. If not, well, then I will just build it. When you get a chance, post the pix of the fliptop bench.

Ok, when I have it finished I’ll post it for sure. Basically following one of the woodsmith shops plans out of their “small shop magazine”
