What wood to use for secondary wood? - 14 replies
Hello, I am in the design phase of a pretty big jewelry armoire. I have never built a chest of drawers or done any kind of case work before. The outside will be made from walnut. The secondary wood is still undecided. My local hardwood supplier sells Ash, Beech, and (Soft) Ambrosia Maple all for about the same price. I have never worked with ...

Need to design a 6' dining room bench - 5 replies
Hello, I am making a 6 foot long dining room table bench out of cherry and some hard maple. The bench will feature 10/4 legs and 6/4 stock for everything else. The bench is 18” high and 16” wide. My concern is whether I could support 500 lbs of weight on this bench without it failing. If not, then whats the best way to preserve th...

I have made a small box (3 inches on a side by 2.5 inches deep) but unfortunately I kinda messed it up in a few places ;) Most of the problems I fixed but the last problem I haven’t figured out the best way to fix. Help me spend 300$ - 6 replies
Got a rebate in mail on one of those visa gift cards, now trying to figure out what to do with it. I have a pretty complete shop with hand planes, and floor machines etc. So I guess the question is, if you had 300$ you could spend on woodworking in any way you wished, how would you spend it?

New drawknife or old?? - 10 replies
The post says it all, should I buy a new draw knife or old? Assume I want to spend no more then 70$. I am looking for cutting edges in the 8-10 inch range. I plan to use it to remove material to create rounded edges on curved stock. Basically as a step between a band saw and a rasp. There seems to be a large number of used drawknifes in this pri...

Best Angle Grinder for Woodworking? - 5 replies
I need an angle grinder so I can use a sculpting wheel as well as use it as a disc grinder for a bar stool project I am working on. I want to get my project done this weekend so that means I’ll be buying my angle grinder from either a big box store or a local hardware store. I don’t plan to ever use this tool for cutting metal, it wi...

Filling out the shop - Next Tool? - 6 replies
Hello, I am trying to figure out what my next tool purchase should be. I enjoy buying old tools and restoring them, so I always have a new restore in the offing. The trouble is, I’ve been doing this for a while so I have a pretty decent array of tools. I don’t want to buy a tool just so I can do the restore. I want to buy a tool s...

Mystery Number 7 Hand Plane - 13 replies
Hello all, I started woodworking about a year ago but spent a lot of that time restoring old woodworking machines to build up my shop. Despite my love of power tools I have recently had several projects that simply require the use of hand planes. I previously did not own any hand planes so I went to ebay and bought a few. So far the few I hav...
