Had the unpleasant reminder today to remember that like beer, you have to keep an eye on how you prepare hide glue or CRUDE WILL GROW IN IN… >:( On the good side I had only made a few ounces, so it wasn’t a major lose. It’s just too cool to be able to glue up boards without clamps using this stuff! I was wondering, do an...

Hide glue - 13 replies
Does anyone know how long hide glue is good for, and second, if the dry hide glue I found is still good, does anyone remember there “recipe” for hydrating it and making use of it? I was cleaning out some stuff the other day and found a bag of dry hide glue, and after seeing a video on board glue ups by Christopher Schwartz, I thou...

Hey gang, Long time no chat… ;) Trying to get myself back into woodworking after a long absence. Thought I’d jump in with both feet and finally try using my Porter Cable dovetail jig to make some 15” x 15” x 15” boxes for my wife to replace some ratty cane covered ones we’ve had for years. Can anyon...

I have made a small box to mount to metal rack. The rack is approximately 10 inches by 10 inches with two metal bars running across the middle, spaced evenly. I do not want the box to move at all. I am looking for suggestions as to the best way to mount the box to the rack. The box has a lid I want to be able to open, so straps around the ...

I need some advice on the best way to upholster a box. It’s going to be approx 15w x 12l x 12h. I am going to use a water resistant vinyl. I plan on padding it under the vinyl. I would very much like to make the staples or nails are invisible as possible. Any and all advice appreciated! Milo

Just curious if anyone has seen these videos or not. I have a lot of respect for Bib Lang’s co-worker, Christopher Schwarz (yeah, I know, who doesn’t), and wanted to know if anyone had first hand knowledge of these dvds. Thanks, Milo

Will fiberglass resin work as a decent epoxy? - 6 replies
I’m working on my V Drum sander project, and I am at the point to fill my pvc pipe with the circle cutout on the center rod. The cutouts are just a tad bit too small. Since I need to epoxy them in, I’m not too worried about it, I’m hoping it will fill nicely (I HOPE!) Here’s my main question. I’ve got a quart...

Hey gang, I want to make a V-Belt Sander, and I am at the stage where I am making the drum. I think I am going to make small circles out of 3/4” MDF and glue them up on a steel pin. I’ve feel really good about the other aspects, but the drum has me a bit nervous. There seem to be two schools of thought on the best way to make...

Magazines and periodicals. WHY do you read them? - 15 replies
Hey Folks, I’ll ask the question that’s been asked 1000 times on 100 boards, what magazines and periodicals do you read regularly, but more importantly, WHY? What sets what your read apart from the other magazines out there? We’ve all seen list of magazines, usually because some new woodworker wants to know what he or sh...

Just wondering if anyone has successfully made a Home-made Shopsmith Horizontal Drum Sander. I want to make one using a Block bearing set into the lath endstock & the chock to hold the drum. I figure I can do this is I don’t get too crazy with the size of the drum. 18” maybe? Plus I’m not going to try for a thickness st...

East Tennessee (and KY, West NC) Lumberjocks - 6 replies
Just wondering how many of you are out there, and if we’re interested in a get-together later this summer. I’m in Sevier County (Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg), and thought it might be a good place to meet. Several tool stores in the area to visit if you come. ;-) Just curious. Leave a note if interested. Milo

Woodworking Magazines on itunes, amazon... - 3 replies
Just out of curiosity, has anyone heard if the bigger woodworking magazine (PW, FWW, WOOD, AW, etc.) have made any plans to publish an digital version for the Kindle, iPad, et al? You’d think it was a no brainer, since most publishers put thier mags togather on computer now anyway. I ask because I am seriously considering an iPad. Which...
