Woodshop Overhaul #1: The plan

So I’ve discovered that my original garage woodshop was not very functional for me. With only about half of a two car garage to use for space, I was lacking an outfeed table and assembly table, and only had a workbench that was attached to the wall. I was also in serious need of storage space. So off to the computer I went. Lucky for me I had a copy of Microsoft Visio on my work laptop computer. Well after several trips back and forth and a lot of measuring I came up with a plan… well I’ve done a little more than that. I’ve start putting things in motion. I built the assembly table from the Wood Whisperer Website with a few changes. It will work as my assembly table/workbench/outfeed table. On the one wall I am putting up a french cleat system for storage. Below is my floorplan layout. I will post pictures as I near completion.

Planer and Jointer #1: Any thoughts?

Does anyone have any suggestions for a planer and jointer for a small garage woodshop on a budget. I get most of my wood from lowes and home depot but am noticeing even their “milled” wood isn’t always true. I noticed some benchtop models for about 250 each… and also some combo units for about the same. I’d love to hear some suggestions. Also if anyone knows other options for getting wood around the Ft Bragg, NC area please hit me up. Thanks

To stain or not to stain #1: Love me some stain

So I’m starting another project for a going away plague for a fellow Soldier. It will be a shadow box with two crossed replica harpers ferry pistols… felt backdrop… a couple other features. I’m making it out of Red Oak… and now I’m at that critical point of to stain or put a natural finish. Well I already think I’ve made my choice on this project but would love to hear what others have to say.
