So I saw Trifern’s work (check out this) and was just blown away by his finishing technique. I’ve been wanting to try something like that for a while, but I always felt the rounded shape is some of the impact, so I never tried it as I didn’t have a lathe.

Well I finally got a lathe and after a few practice pieces, I turned a semi-amphora to use as the test piece to try my hand at a dye job like Trifenrn’s. It’s not perfect by any stretch, but it’s a pleasing shape and not bad for maybe my fifth or sixth turning. Most importantly it got the thumbs up from the LOML and she’s looking forward to having it when it’s done, so all is well.

I’m going to pick up the dyes this weekend and try and start in Saturday afternoon. Thanks to Trifern and his blog for making it look achievable by mere mortals, I feel like I might be able to pull off something not half bad.

Appreciate the comment. I tend to be a perfectionist about my own work. There are a lot of torn fibers as I need to sharpen the basic set of turning tools I have. I was going to sand it smooth, but decided at the end of the day the objective was to work on my finishing technique, so I got it smooth-ish and called it done.
