My first Lathe - 19 replies
Started thinking about buying my first lathe…since I have not turned 1 thing before I was thinking of taking a beginners class…but anyway. I found this…a Rockwell 46-111 for $235… is this a good deal? is it a model I would not be able to get parts for? should I stay away from this one since I’m a newbie at it?...

Slot cutter vs biscuit jointer - 9 replies
I need to use a couple fasteners like these: http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=784&filter=clips I have a cabinet I need to replace a top on. I do not have a biscuit jointer but I have a slot cutter. Would it be too dangerous to use a slot cutter in a hand held router to make a couple groves in or does someone have another idea?

Sanding Cabinet Frame - 5 replies
I have the 3 main sides of a cabinet I’m working on and for some reason I’m off about a 1/16” or so too wide on my top rail of the face frame. Is a belt sander the best option here to make it even or handsanding? thanks

? About Doors - 5 replies
On a TV stand I am making, I have the bottom doors that open outward from each other. How much of a gap should I allow between the doors so the will not rub. It is a perfect fit now closed, but by the time I add a few coats of varnish and 3 coats of poly, they will rub pretty bad. Any suggestions for how much I should shave off each door or...

Ridgid R4121 used Miter saw - 5 replies
I have a basic miter saw you can get and it is a piece of junk. Got some use out of it but looking to upgrade. Would you buy a Ridgid R4121 used off of CL if you could get it under $215 with little use or would you hold out for something else? Don’t really need it at the moment. I have a very nice table saw so that is what I am using a...

Planer's death... - 11 replies
After a long battle this week with tearing apart my planer and replacing bearing and cleaning it up and changing blades around. I called the death to my planer this afternoon. I have a few projects in the works but nothing is time critical. So I ask the question that I probably know the answer to anyway. Do planers ever go on sale? I ass...

Problem with Planer - 8 replies
My friend is letting me borrow his Craftsman planer model 351.217220 if that matters. I seems to be spitting out 1/4” size semi circle metal pieces. It is also making an awful noise on top of the loud noise it usually makes. I checked the blades and they seem to be in good working condition. The belt seems to be fine. The rollers se...

Twin Bed Posts - 1 reply
For my foot posts for a twin bed, I’m thinking if having them be about a 3” square post. Should I glue up two boards or make it look nicer with a solid piece and cut it out?

Headboard shelves - 3 replies
Going to make a oak twin bed for my son. The headboard will have a few shelves. Should I be using oak plywood for most of the headboard and either trim it or use veneer strips, or just use solid oak and glue it up?

Flip-top Planer Stand - 9 replies
I’m looking to build a stand like a few of them I have seen on here. Is the Wood Magazine’s version the best one to get plans from? Still too new to just look at it and say….thats all that needs to be done, or is there a better version somewhere else? I plan on having the planer on one side and either a drill or other smal...

Staining, poly or nothing - 7 replies
I am almost done with my 1st project – my mobile work bench. Here is a picture from Nov 09 wood mag. http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/woodstore_2093_37319433 I have a light colored, almost like this picture, solid core door that I’m going to use for the top instead of the 2×4s. Any suggestions on what I should use? I want to k...

Table saw trouble - 13 replies
I have a Delta 36-978…everything was fine last night and when I went to do my next cut I lost all power. The breaker and outlets have power, so it has to be somewhere on the saw. I unscrewed the switch and all seemed well there. I did press the overload button but nothing seemed to happen. Any suggestions where I should look on the...

Rewiring a Delta 36-978 - 10 replies
Got a sweet deal on craigslist for a 36-978 for $200. Best $200 I ever spent….great shape, little use…long story short I need to rewire it for 240 volt. The manual doesn’t say much. I have the correct plug and the electric taken care of in the garage. Has anyone done this? is there any better pictures or description of ho...

Workbench question... - 5 replies
Going to attempt one of my first woodworking projects being a decent workbench. For the 2 open shelves it asks for 3/4” birch plywood. Do I use the MDF core or the veneer core? Cost is pretty much equal…what do you prefer?
