« Part 1: My New/Old 32" Jointer Plane Part 2 of Hand Tools series no next part

Ordered it from LV on Friday and received it this afternoon. Couldn’t wait to open the box and start cutting!

First impression – BEAUTIFUL!! It was much heavier than I expected, most likely due to the thick brass back, but the handle was very comfortable in my hand (three finger grip). It’s much heavier than my other back saws (an old Disston and a no-name) but also much easier to saw with.

I’m just a beginner and still need to practice on technique, but I first tried it on a piece of pine and it cut like a knife through butter – no downward force on my part at all. I then tried a piece of scrap oak. It was a little harder to start (I’m sure it’s my technique) but once it got going was quite smooth. I’m sure if I add a little wax it’ll be even smoother.

It cut straighter than I do! In other words, I was able to quickly figure out what I was doing wrong and correct it to cut straight. It actually taught me! Very cool. Now I can’t wait to afford some wood to actually work on something.

Here’s some photos and my first cuts in the oak. I wasn’t really trying to cut to the line – more trying to cut straight.

I’m a sucker for a nice backsaw Mike and your Wenzloff is gorgeous. I’ll be looking at your tenons very closely from now on :-)
