Alas, it IS possible to find figured maple at the big box stores. Ran over to HD during a lunch break last week for some lawn stuff and “figured” I’d try my luck on finding a diamond in the rough I hear often enough on LJs. Well, all be darned if I didn’t run across an 11ft piece of some curly maple. Just glad I was there to rescue it from being abused by a weekend warrior who may have used it to support a deck or something.
I think I may have a new lunch hobby.

Great piece of wood. Nice catch. I’ve seen them there myself and have picked up a few that had milew on them and I got them for $0.79 a board

Karson, Yes I saw those there too. The stock was filled with pieces with great spalting/mildew/greening (?). I just couldn’t take my eye off the curly. I need to find out when they get their shipments.

WOW! I’m not far from you, in Rockville, MD. I better go back to HD and check out their stock!

I sell soft maple where I work, A customer bought a beautiful piece of curley maple a while back, we just sell it as maple, what ever they ship we sell as maple, the next day he brought it back, wanted to pick another piece, said he could not , no matter how hard he tried, sand those defects out of that board, I just took it back, said you dont deserve that piece anyways and he picked a white boring piece of maple, his return is in one of my projects now.

I’ve found the same thing at Lowes a couple of years ago. You never know what you will find if you dig through the pile.

I can see the rush to all of the local HD’s and Lowes’. I used to look, but I never saw one quite as good as what you have!
Great score.

Every time I am in one of the home centers I stop at the hardwood racks and see if I can get lucky. Every now and then I am and I try to pick it up. They are all sanded smooth so the curl is sometimes a little difficult to see. However when I bring home my treasures they get the hand plane treatment and the figure just pops. Those pieces are the best box store curly maple I have ever seen, nice score.

Maybe a dumb question, but the home depot near me does not sell maple – only poplar, white and red oak. Does your home depot sell maple or did you find this amongst some other wood?

cotfessi. Not a dumb question. One of my local HD’s doesn’t carry maple either. The other does along with poplar, pine and oak. This was just part of their mix of maple.

A follow up on this post. I went to another local HD last night with a buddy of mine and found yet another piece of curly, although not as insane as the first piece (photo above.) I also found an 11ft piece with some birds eye on about 4 feet of it, front and back. Unfortunately I didn’t have my truck with me at the time so I left them in the stack. The odd thing is all of the gems that I have been finding are 3/4” maple in 1-3/4” thickness. I haven’t seen any great figuring on wider pieces. Wonder why that is? Maybe just random? I’m holding out hope that I’ll find a nice fat 6” wide piece to do some table tops.

David9951,
Yes I saw some at Merrifield on Saturday night, however the piece in the photo was purchased at HD in Falls Church off of route 50 near seven corners.

Wow, that’s surprising. I have never once once found curly maple at Home Depot, so congratulations on the discovery!
