Toy Box

This is a toy box I made for my oldest son(3). The woods are cherry with Tiger maple trim. Jointer is handcut dovetails. My first attempt at hand-cut. They are not as perfect as I would have hoped, but am happy with the way they turned out. The finish is shellac with a couple of coats of wax.
What is special about this project is that I did everything with hand-tools. From dimensioning the lumber to fitting the jointery.
Thanks for looking:)

The top flips over and there is a lego table on the other side. It is made of 3/4 ply. I let my son pick the paint color. Fun project, and they love it.

First piece of furniture (ready to take to finisher)

This project was quite the learning experience. When choosing a wood to work with, choosing hickory with any figure is quite difficult to work with. Tearout is not something you do with the old Mustang, it is something you do then cuss and scream and head back to the lumberyard…again. Grain really does change direction on you.
I did my first mortise and tenon joints with this project. A good chisel is worth the money. About halfway through, the LN chisels just did not seem overpriced.
A hammer is a great helper with assembly, good thing I used hickory.
I will post more photos when I get the piece back from the finisher.
Thanks for looking.

Brother's Engagement Ring Box

My brother is getting engaged soon so I made him this box for the ring. It was a first attempt on a box of this size. It is maple with a purpleheart top. Four coats of shellac and then a couple coats of laquer. Simple and clean. Lots of chisel work to get this thing to fit tightly.

Miter Saw Workbench

I got this miter saw as a wedding gift. As we are coming up on my five year anniversary, I thought it might be appropriate to build an appropriate bench for it. I got the design from Woodsmith Tools and Jigs. This was a fun way to learn some new techniques. Drilling for shelves. Mounting a cabinet. Using a piano hinge. Making two independent cabinets with a rotating fence perfectly square with each other.
Dust removal for this machine sucks. I am trying to figure out what kind of system to install behind it. It is a beast, 12” compound miter saw. The original plan had it sliding back to get it out of the way. That won’t work because of its size, so it is fixed in place.
Now I will be able to clear some space in my shop and load up the shelves.

My first jig: Handheld Router Dado Jig

I started on my router table and realized that I really needed a jig to do the Dado cuts with my router. This is a modification from a Jig book. Took me an afternoon to make, I went very slow to make sure that it was square.
It is made of hardboard, MDF and a piece of oak.

First Project: Table for Drill Press

This is my first project. I decided to take the plunge and learn woodworking. Having always wanted to start, I quit wanting and just did. Making a bunch of stuff for my shop seemed to be a good way of learning some basic technique on inexpensive material.
This drill press stand is made of MDF, and some scrap wood that I inherited from an estate. The drawer is made of a couple maple. That was the toughest part. I look at drawers completely different now.
My next project will be a router table.
