My wife and I built our dream house with our own two inexperienced hands over a three year period. Part of our planed home was a woodworking shop for me, and we decided, because of our lot size, to place my shop above the garage. My shop is 24 feet by 35 feet with vaulted ceiling. One of the purposes of my woodworking shop was to facilitate the making of all the trim in our house. But first I must learn how to make this trim, again I am inexperience but more then ready to learn. We live in the Midwest were estate auctions are a common occurrence, we go to these auctions and purchase the tools I will need up in my shop. So far I have a Sears 10” table saw, 16” Jet band-saw, 12” Ridgid compound sliding miter saw, bench belt/disk sander, Delta drill press, mini lathe, full lathe, 12” delta planer, Kregg pocket hole jig, router table w/Milwaukee 1 hp router and a 6 jointer most of all this via auctions and really good prices! What more could a garage guy need?!

Kelly, how about posting some pictures or your shop when you get the chance? Tours of other shops are always enjoyable to see.

The problem with the pictures is; I am still trying to arrange the space and everything is helter skelter right now. When I was conceived the gene that give “organizational skills” missed me big time. I have solicited my wife to come up and help me arrange the place! Soon the better!!
There will be pictures soon!

Kelly, I am sure your wife will be a big help. I just hope that she is not like mine, who occasionally “volunteers” to help me clean up my shop. She has a penchant for seeing things kept neat and orderly and, at times, comments on the “mess” that my shop is in. Her idea of straightening up is to get rid of all those small pieces of wood that are cluttering up my shop which she knows I can’t bear to part with. And her idea of organizing is to put my hand tools lying on the benches in the first available drawer/cabinet that has some space in it. Which, of course, means that I later have to hunt to find them. :) Anyway good luck with the clean-up.

Hi Kelly – I have the same “organizational skills” problem, although when I was on active duty I was NCOIC of an AADCP (Army Air Defense Command Post) and we were purdy well organized then, I don’t understand where I went wrong! I would post pics of my shop, but since I’ve been put on permanent disability by the state I can’t get it mucked out enough to see that it is actually a shop! Kelly, from one old sarge to another thanks for all of your years of service.
