Part 1: A Hot Mess

06-03-2013 09:46 PM by MarkTheFiddler | 1 comment »

I designed a cocktail table that I thought would be awesome. I spent ALL day yesterday cutting the top pieces. Late last night I tried a dry fit because because I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t. It’s AWFUL. It is SO Bad that I’m Scraping a lot of my design. However, I can make some of this work for me. The center section needs a bit of help because: The Oak spacers are about 1/64 ” too wide. Who would have thought?. I’m keeping the cente...

Part 2: Simplify ..... sort of....

06-19-2013 04:41 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 4 comments »

My first take was too busy, muddy and lacked contrast. I decided to take what was working and go from there. I definately wanted to keep the Navajo mountain pattern in the Bubinga. Here is where the project is at the moment because – that’s all I have. ;) I’m not going to use Oak. All of the lighter colored wood will be cherry. I’ll be adding a paduak border a bit later. I may be addidng in some peruvian Walnut (Never heard of such a thing until today. Nex...

Part 3: My vision has returned.

06-21-2013 03:53 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 6 comments »

The Glue up wasn’t going perfect because I didn’t use a flat surface to work from. That is now remedied. I was real close to starting over when things started working out. Here’s where I’m at as of 30 minutes ago. Not bad. I got it straightened while I was doing the final glue up. I did some sanding with 40 then 80 grit to level off the worst of my mistakes on the top. I then used the sanding dust and some Tightbond III to make my filler and started taking care ...

Part 4: Another Dry Fit Test

06-22-2013 02:38 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 7 comments »

Howdy, Wouldn’t you know. I cut part of the border from paduak. I was real careful to get it just perfect. It Ain’t. I’ll get if fixed up because I once again have a nervous tendency to err on the side of “Too Big”. You know – shaving 86 of these suckers will once again – suck. Grandpa Len sent me a very kindly note telling me I need to put this creation on a backer. Well – he’s right of course. I was already courting disaster by...

Part 5: More of the table top.

07-31-2013 10:12 PM by MarkTheFiddler | 9 comments »

Howdy, I finally found a bit of time to work on the table yesterday and Sunday. I built the underside of the top from larger pieces of cabinet grade plywood (That’s what I had). Then I added an extra layer to the bottom of that. I didn’t have any plywood that was large enough for the entire top so I overlapped the second layer. I made a style modification to the top to take care of the gigantic empty spots in the corners. Although you can’t see the final top design ...

Part 6: Gettin' Leggy

08-05-2013 02:02 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 4 comments »

Whew Doggie! It’s hot out there. You may have been through the same thing as me. Glue – clamp – look at the clock – look at the clock – look at the clock…. Either that or you’re gettin’ funky with the pin nailer. Today and Yesterday it was easy to allow for glue dry time. I work out of the garage and the temperature has been a over 100 for a while. I Cut – Glue – Clamp – and run inside to rehydrate. That glue up time was ...

Part 7: Table Built - on to the the finish ........ line.

08-11-2013 01:47 AM by MarkTheFiddler | 15 comments »

Had a bit more time this morning and late afternoon. I finished up building the legs then got them attached. Lot’s of cleanup work is required but the rest of my time will be spent making it just so. I decided to make the inside legs into triangles. It’s a lot less work, and as I understand it, sturdier. I go a little cleanup done of the top. I’m chomping at the bit to do some more work. Id be surprised if I could get her ready for finish in ano...
