Picked up a Stanley #4 type 16 at an antique store this summer.
It was in pretty good shape outside a bit of rust and orange paint. (Why do so many planes have misc paint on them?). The japanning was in good shape.

I tried electrolysis for the first time and have already used it a few more times since.
Getting ready for electrolysis
As you can see, my soup was already pretty rusty.

I decided that I like the look of some of the gray left over as opposed to a sanded, wire brushed, or polished look. It seems to keep a bit more of a patina look without the rust.
I sanded down the knob and tote and applied Watco Danish oil.

Unfortunately I don’t have any action shots, but don’t worry, she is sharp and cutting nicely.

I’ve got a few more coming but they aren’t quite done yet. I started using them prior to finishing up the restore.

Thanks, I’ve been there. That thread inspired me to buy a couple planes in the first place. Then after I cleaned those up and used them I realized how enjoyable it is to restore and use these old beauties.

Nice No. 4. Been using the same one for over thirty years.

Have your say...
