And my first ring." src="http://lumberjocks.com/assets/pictures/projects/146343-196x130.jpg" />

I normally do not like to stain wood, but these two truly ” NEEDED IT ” in order to bring out the patterns of the grain that came out while I was sanding. So again these are from a Neighbors house. We trimmed the Lilac bush and I just hate throwing out usable wood. The ring is made from the same wood and is my first one.. Hopefully I can sell it along with the cane.

I was asked to build this by someone at the last art show I attended and participated in. He liked the T top one I had but wanted one with a ball on top. The top is about the size of a baseball and 34 inches tall. There is all sorts of scrap in this one. Walnut, Maple, Meranti, Oak, Pine , Sugar Maple???? ( I think ) and Cherry. All together it took about 6 hours. The hardest part is gluing it all together. I am getting much better at eyeballing these. The taper is pretty accurate. there was only a few places where I had to sand a little more to get the lumps out. This is one of my favorite canes that I have made.

It is a piece that I am very proud of. I left it on display at work and it was dropped so there is a chip in it at the moment. ( insert sad face here )It will have to go back on the Lathe to be removed. The markets start up up soon so it needs to be fixed and i might make a few similar ones.

A set of pay it forward bowls!

I made these today for some guys down the street refacing a mini mall at the end of my street that has the Bakery, Convenience store, Laundry Mat and Dry Cleaner. I asked them to save some scrap plywood for me and they were perplexed until I showed them what I do with them. They gave me a huge bag full of all sort of goodies. I can build 20 Projects at least with what they gave me so I made the a few little bowls they can use for change or something. Who knows what other wood I can get from there rip outs. Each one was Identical to start then I shaped them a little differently. I left the hard lines in some spots so it adds a little more interest.

I can’t get the picture of the single bowls to upload at the moment.

Pay it Forward

I am not sure what type of wood the lighter color is. It seems like some type of Maple. This was part of a table that I found on the side of the road. It was one of those mass produced jobbies and was painted! YUCK!!!!!! ( No paint should ever touch a nice wood like that) Made in Thailand I believe. If anyone can name that wood for me I would totally appreciate it. I thought of the design as I was going. I pictured it as a nut bowl. If you can see it there is a little lip on the top edge. The shells can go there instead of back in the bowl or into another. The dark ring is Mahogany.

I am in a unique position. I have a free shop, cheap rent and a really cool landlord. I keep going into debt but I am doing what I love. On a daily basis I am coming up with designs I want to build. Making trips to the Lumber Yard and getting a nice hunk of a classy looking piece of wood is fine but , to me where it is at is finding something on the side of the road and turning it into 20 different things. Lately I have done my version of ” Pay it forward ”. When I find wood on the side of the road I remember the house I got it from and make them a bowl or something out of it. I think it’s a nice thank you for the contribution. Kinda like a Tax rebate!!!!!!

I have not figured if I am going to ship it or fly over with it!!!! All scraps again. Using them up. I have not bought wood in months. I love it!!! Planed and rounded by hand. I used a string to mark the circle then cut it out with a coping saw.

These are the ” matching ” bowls in the just glued up the first layer.

Now I have the first layer pretty much done I just need to collect some more scraps to get the next layer. I have used up almost ALL of my pieces. The bowls are like a Jigsaw Puzzle. WHat ever shape I need I just look through my scraps until I find one that fits. Theses take a while. I’ve done a few like this. Turning them gets tough when you end up with grains facing al sorts of directions!

Starving artist here!!!! I used a bunch of strips that were leftovers for the ” In Between ” segments. So a few are different sizes. It still looks pretty cool. I need to purchase a few new tools also. Currently I only have a 3/8s gauge and a few flat chisels.

Again this is 100% recycled wood. I found the Mahogany down the road, there was stacks of it. I just did not have the strength to carry it all. One bundle was about 60 lbs. It was from a very old deck that was torn up. If they only had patience. I am sure with a little TLC the Deck would have looked amazing. There was some Yellow pine mixed in also.

Herring Bone cutting Board

I really enjoyed this one. It took about 8 hours. This ended up at my friends mothers. I used the softer woods on the outside wrap where there would be no cutting. I also beveled the outer 2 inches at a 5 or so degree angle. This sucker weighs about 10 pounds. I screwed each of the outer wraps into the center to help with any swelling. It is much easier to do the herring bone pattern with different types of wood. My eyes get lost in the Pattern sometimes.
