These are some newel posts that I made for a local contractor recently. They are made out of Knotty Alder and are 7” x 7” square. The barley twists are done on the legacy ornamental mill. The column caps were hand turned with a tenon and applied.

wow … your photos really show the enormity of scale well. The top balls look like 6 inchers and the curve at the cap begs to be touched, ...really fun post
,,
what will the finish be?
.. I’m sitting here imagining the piece in quartersawn white oak and about 3 coats of garnet shellac>grin>

Les,
For what will these massive posts be used? Can’t wait to see the finished pictures. (You will post them, we hope.)
Just thinking of making those before the invention of the Legacy is quite mind-boggling. We need to make a point of getting to civilization some day where they have high-speed internet so we can see the Legacy in action! ;-) (There must be on-line video of it somewhere.)
Thanks for sharing.

Wow. Those are huge.
My favorite part is the little cap on top of the ball. That is sweet.

Those are great…and large. I would be curious to see how they would finish them…spray I would think. They are beautiful.
