Iam retired & divide my time between woodworking in the fall & winter/ gardening during spring, summer & fall. During my working life, I did a lot of carpentry around the home from building garages to finishing basements which also included wiring & plumbing. Retirement allowed me to move on to fun projects instead of those of necessity.
I no longer work at large projects ( there is only so much room in the house). I belong to a woodworkers guild that sponsors toys for children of needy families in Dec of each year. I discovered that I like making toys & they are small & donated & don't clutter up the home.

Hello Lee,

Welcome to LJs. I hope that you will find this to be an exciting and rewarding part of your woodworking journey.

-- With God's help all things are possible- even woodworking. Woodworking is not just a hobby, it is an (expletive deleted) expensive hobby.

Welcome to LumberJocks. Glad to have you aboard.

Glad that you make toys for children.

I’m a member of the Mason-Dixon Woodworkers Club, We make toys for children about 50 weeks of the year. We meet on Wed of each week. We usually make about 1200 toys. We distribute them to other charities who then give them to the children. I’ve posted some blogs about our toy giveaway on the first Sat of each December. We have anywhere from 5 to 15 people that show up on toy workshop day.

Welcome to Lumberjocks. The projects are an inspiration, the information is priceless and the people are supportive. The only problem is, the site can get addictive.
God Bless

Hi Lee,
Welcome to LJs.

I noticed you had trouble applying a picture from Photobucket.

When you copy direct link, & paste, you have to type an (asterisk !) in the beginning, & the end of the code.

I had the same problem until Martin straightened me out.

You know Mike, it’s surprising to me how many hobby wood workers live in Edmonton & area until like yourself they make themselves known on forums like this one….or until you walk into the LV store LOL.
Sorry for being slow to respond but we are preparing for recarpetting the house & you have no idea how much junk you have to move until the rooms are clear enough for the layers. We are too old to muscle around furniture so for a fee they will move it all. However, there are lamps & the contents of the closets where a lot of stuff is squirrelled away that you forgot you had, beds to strip, china cabinets to empty etc.
They aren’t comming until Sept.22nd so we are doing a little every day rather than last minute panic.
I hate disruptions like this but it should be the last one before we can no longer handle living in a house but will stay as long as we can.

Hi Lee. I saw a reply that you posted saying 5 years before you retired, you started building up your tool base. I am doing the same, hoping to retire in 18 months. How did that work out for you? Any advice from a guy that’s been there and done it? Thanks!

Hi Hairy: Actually it worked out quite well because who can purchase a new tool & stand around and look at it instead of actually using it ? That is where the proficiency comes from….experience. Fortunately I was lucky & did not buy bummers because at the time I did not have a computer so was unable to ask others such as those on this forum for their tool impuit. The only irritating mistake that I made was when I installed heat in my garage/shop. I bought a ceiling mounted garage natural gas heater instead of a radiant tube heater with no moving parts. With what I have if there is any dust whatever in the air it will be dragged by the heater’s fan across the heat exchanger tubes which then fries that dust on the tubes. The tubes are very difficult to clean hence efficiency of the heater has dropped off over the years. When it gets bad enough I will bite the bullet & replace it with a radiant tube. Other than that….glad I started early & you will be too.

Thanks, Lee! I’m pretty much following the same plan. I figure I should stock up on what I need while I’m still working. I already have the overhead gas heater, oh well. Thanks.
