Okay, I couldn’t take it any more. I went out after that last entry and cleared the lathe off and started finishing some pens that I had prepared months ago. Boy, it was sure fun to just create sawdust. Here is how they turned out – http://lumberjocks.com/projects/3284.

Shop Improvements #2: Will I ever get to cut wood again?

Well, it has been a while since I wrote the first entry. Not much has changed in the shop. Right after I built the wall and insulated it I discovered “dry rot” on the south side of my house. It was a mad dash to remove siding and bad sheeting and replace before going back to work as a school counselor. Needless to say, the house is buttoned up for winter but the shop is a shambles. I still need to sheetrock over the insulated wall and ceiling, then comes the mudding and taping then painting. After which I will evaulate my lighting. Will I ever get to cut wood again???

Shop Improvements #1: First Entry

After 10 years I am finally getting around to some needed shop upgrades. When we first moved into our home there was never a question about 1/2 of the 2-car garage becoming the “Woodshop”. I started diagraming my space (e.g. where tools would be placed, storage, etc…). Over the years I acquired a cabinet from an old school that is m main storage for power tools and supplies. I have insulated and sheet-rocked the entire exterior of the detached 2-car garage. and put up a plastic vis-queen divider between the shop and “stuff” (also known as , bikes, toys, freezer, fishing and camping gear, etc…). After living with a plastic wall for 8 years, I have decided to build a more substantial wall. I framed and insulated a divdiding wall replacing the plastic. I have also insulated the ceiling of the shop side and plan to sheet rock, and paint. This should improve lighting, as well as the dust collection. Not to mention the better sound proofing for my neighbors. Once this remodel is done my next plan is to work on the actual shop space and try to make it more efficient. I plan to build a storage cabinet for larger bench top power tools and then build a decent work bench. I have followed Christopher Schwarz articles and hope to take from his experiences and build a bench that will meet my needs.
