I am refinishing three 65 year old walnut altars from my wife's home church. These are small
versions of the main altar in the sanctuary and were build in my inlaws' house by a group of church
members in 1948. They were used in Sunday School Rooms and received some rough treatment
over the last 65 years. I stripped the old varnish and proceded with some light sanding and refinishing.
All has been going well except for the last coats of the finish.
I am using GF Armor Seal as the topcoat. I have liked this product a lot with previous
projects. My problem is that we have been having very warm and humid weather here in Iowa lately
and the Armor Seal dries very rapidly. It is dry to the touch in about an hour. This is being wiped on
by the way. I am now down to the final wiped on coats and the appearance is not satisfactory. The
surface appears to have streaks. This is not a matter of the finish being uneven. It feels smooth.
I am wondering is this is an effect of appling the finish when the temp is in the 90's? Is there something
that can be done or do I just need to wait for cooler weather?
