« Part 2: Top for sideboard cabinet. Part 3 of Projects with Red Oak Flooring leftovers series no next part

I started by Gluing the smooth side of flooring together to get some thicker materials, after which I ran through the planer on both sides to remove the grooves. I reduced each piece to about 1”

https://s3.amazonaws.com/vs-lumberjocks.com/oug6w9p.jpg!

I then cut out the parts as shown, creating a dovetail and shoulders to keep the handle secure, even though the glue would likely hold.

Then to glue up!

Sanding and shaping

I put a 45 degree champher on all edges of the heads to give a nice faceted look and keep edges from breaking away as easy. (router table)

The reveal with mineral oil.

The final product.

Flooring eh, I will have to give that a hit next mallet run.
I might even make one for my sons camping gear
They look very good even if you did not want to use them, certainly beats the budget ones sold in some stores.
I will have to remember to name it the Lalen Mallet in recognition of your fine work.

Thanks Tony! They did come out pretty nice. I know red-oak has a little more of an open grain, but seems heavy enough.

:). Thanks Robert! Yeah the flooring is solid red Oak, 3/4 of an inch with the groove but when you mill that off you still have almost 5/8ths of a good solid wood. Pretty flat too.

I still have quite a bit so I’m trying to find uses for it.
