This story began about four years ago when I responded to a WOOD Magazine solicitation for shop photographs. After taking and submitting a few general shots, I was contacted by Managing Editor, Marlen Kemmet, who requested I submit additional photos of everything I could think of taking – overall shots, special construction, jigs, drawers, etc. In response, I sent in about 72 additional photos. That resulted in a couple of additional contacts, but little further came of it at that time, and I put it out of my mind.
Then, out of the blue about a year ago, I received a call from Carl Voss, Publication Editor for “America’s Best Home Workshops”. For anyone who might not know, that’s a WOOD Magazine “Special Interests Publication” that comes our about once a year. Carl told me that my shop was one of several under consideration for the 2013 edition. Ultimately, my shop was one of those selected, and much of my spare time during this past year was spent on providing additional shop details, personal information, scheduling and working with the photographer, assisting with photo captions, proofing, etc.
The 2013 edition became available on March 26th, and I found copies locally at Home Depot and Lowe’s. The publication is a beautiful collection of photographs from eighteen featured shops plus numerous additional great ideas from other shops around the country, including large shops, small shops, pro shops, hobbyist’s shops, etc., and one of the best collections of shop ideas you’ll find. Being a part of this has been an honor and a great experience, and I had the privilege of working with Carl and several members of his great team.
Lumberjocks were well represented in the 2013 edition, including Marlen Kemmet, Angela Weeks, Todd Clippinger, Marc Spagnuolo, and possibly others of which I’m not aware. Congratulations to them all!
If you have a great shop – or a not-so-great shop, but one with great ideas, I recommend you take the time to submit them to Wood Magazine. It’s well worth the effort, and perhaps you too will be honored by being selected for the next edition.
