I'm an 81 year-old retired Architect who moved from South Florida to Lakeland, Florida in 1998. My interest in woodworking dates from Jr. High shop - and earlier, but I had no opportunity to have a shop until I retired. In 2003, I designed a freestanding combination double carport with attached 543 square foot shop with a nice view out onto a small lake.
The shop floor plan is very unusual, but one that I find works out quite well. Except for a completed wall-workbench and a freestanding workbench currently under construction, most of my projects are small - a Thorsen side table, a psaltery, keepsake box, cheeseboard, table centerpiece, bandsaw boxes, wooden toys, wooden quilt squares, etc. - anything that strikes my fancy - and allows me to learn something new.
My principal other hobby is scenic photography that I enjoy when traveling.

A year or so ago I wrote about “Tops”, describing how simple, small, hand-spun tops can be easily made using 1-1/2” diameter wooden wheels and 2” lengths of ¼” dowels (sharpened on one end and chamfered on the other). The tops I made for our toy ...
I frequently I need to cut multiple dowels to a uniform length. Some projects require only a few, while others – like the small race cars I make – require hundreds. In the past, I usually drilled an appropriately sized hole through a block...
With reluctance, I’ll have to admit to being one of those woodworkers whose table saw guard gathers dust on a shelf most of the time. To provide for a guard on my off-feed table for my Jet SuperSaw that meant either having a gap between the rear ...
