I want to make a cabriole leg with a quarter column in it. I’m puzzled as to how to make the pocket the quarter column sits in. Do I plan for the pocket during the glueup of my leg blank or do I make the pocket during the shaping of the leg. If it’s the latter, what is the best way to go about making the pocket?

Luc,

I am just reading this now, so sorry if this is too late for your use…..but I have made quarter columns a couple of times.

When I did this on a cabriole leg, I made the leg as usual and cut out the square recess afterwards. After marking with a marking gauge, I used a router to take out the bulk of the material and cleaned up to the line with a chisel, followed by a cabinet scraper to smooth out any imperfections.

Hope this is useful. Cal
