Lathe chisel handles - 4 replies

Hey all, I just finished turning a new handle for a Hosaluk style ferrule that a machinist friend made me and that got me thinking about handle shape for lathe chisels. I tend to like shapes like these: Basically they have 2 distinct areas for me to grip them, upper and lower with a hump in between. I was inspired by the handles fo...

Booze safe finish? - 4 replies

A friend of mine has asked me to turn a pair of goblets for him and his wife with the intention of using them to drink wine, mead and other forms of alcohol out of them. What sort of finish would you recommend that’s not only food safe, but alcohol safe? I’ve primarily been using mineral oil and beeswax on things I want to be eaten o...

Great video on holding wood on the lathe - 23 replies

This is the most comprehensive video I’ve ever seen of the different ways to hold wood on a lathe. It’s long, close to an hour and a half, but well worth watching, particularly for newer turners like myself. Enjoy!

Face/lung/eye protection while turning - 8 replies

What do you folks wear on your head when turning? I’ve been wearing my goggles, 3m half face respirator (6800 series I think?) and a face shield on top. This arrangement just isn’t working. It’s bulky, annoying to put on and take off and tends to fog up. The fogging up I think I can fix if I put something over the exhale valve ...

3 braces and a Yankee screwdriver - 2 replies

I won an auction on ebay for a lot of misc tools recently and am offering you guys the things I don’t really need. I have not restored any of these, just sprayed a bit of WD-40 to loosen them up and verify functionality. First up is a North Bros 133H Yankee screwdriver. I don’t have any bits for it. You can find them on ebay or Le...

Hey all, I’ve been thinking about signing up for Shop Class On Demand, which is Popular Woodworking’s online video streaming service (http://shopclass.popularwoodworking.com/). Does anyone have any experience with it? The only review I’ve found for it complains that the user didn’t get The Woodwright’s Shop for h...

Weird saw tooth pattern - 12 replies

I acquired this ~20” EC Atkins hand saw recently on eBay. I was looking over it after it came in the mail and noticed that it has a weird saw tooth pattern. Instead of the teeth all being uniform in length, it appears as though the teeth on this saw are in pairs, with a smaller tooth in front of a larger tooth. Has anyone seen this bef...
