Having slept on it, I decide that it’s a nice handle, but that it really isn’t going to work on this box – so it gets consigned to the “handles of the future” stash, and I set about making another one.
This time I’m going to suspend a piece of Jatoba from pale ash and see how that goes.
On a small piece of ash I route out an 8mm slot – I figure it’s going to be easier to do it now on a small piece than later, on 2 very very small pieces…

Another small slice of the Jatoba, resawn into 2. One side immediately starts to bend :-(

One side is OK, the other is a bit of a mess, but it’s longer than I’m going to need, so I can route the other side flat using a “bridge” technique…

A lot of sanding later, and we have the necessary pieces…

...which I glue together to make the handle…

I’m not sure this is right, either, so I splash a bit of oil on it, carefully avoiding the bottom bits where it’s going to be glued, and try it “in situ”...

if I was sure this was good to go I’d be dowelling and gluing, but I’m not sure. It’ll look better when the top is oiled too. I wish, really, that I’d gone with a hinge – I’m not sure this box wants a handle at all.

Once more, I’m gonna sleep on it.
